Mission Endowment
Fund
The Resurrection Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund was created to
encourage support of the ministry of the congregation through gifts of
accumulated, inherited, or appreciated financial resources. The Mission
Endowment Fund receives various types of gifts, invests those gifts, and then
distributes Fund income to support social ministry projects, benevolence
programs, and critical outreach initiatives. Gifts to the Mission Endowment
Fund are held in perpetuity, thereby enabling Fund donors to leave a permanent
legacy as testimony to their faithful stewardship and generous support of
Resurrection Lutheran Church. Above all, the legacy of these gifts will point
to the Giver of all good gifts, as the ultimate purpose of the Mission
Endowment Fund is to further the mission and ministry of God’s kingdom.
Critical Role of
Resurrection’s Mission Endowment Fund
The purpose of the Mission Endowment
Fund is to extend the mission of RLC beyond the mission and outreach
activities that are typically funded by the annual unified fund. Reflecting
our congregation’s strong stewardship commitment, the Fund enables RLC to
sponsor these additional initiatives to further the mission and ministry of
our congregation. Income from RLC’s Mission Endowment Fund will enable the
Congregation to launch new programs, to reach into our community, and to
extend our ministry as we seek to faithfully follow Jesus’ example of loving
and serving both God and neighbor. Funded projects may initiate something
internal to our congregation, such as the creation of a new adult education
program. Projects may also reach beyond our congregation, such as through
synodical initiatives in ministry and mission development. In select
instances, projects of the larger Church throughout the world could receive
RLC Mission Endowment Fund support.
Projects will vary from time to time
as priorities evolve. The Mission Endowment Fund has been created to permit
donors, through their perpetual gifts, to support RLC’s mission and ministry
for many years.
Background
The Resurrection Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund was formally
established by the congregation on December 6, 1998. The Fund was designed and
developed by a special committee of RLC members who reviewed successful
endowment funds in Lutheran churches around the country. The RLC Mission
Endowment Fund was patterned after the best examples available, and was
tailored specifically to the unique circumstances within RLC. The Fund’s
Charter* governs the purposes, the philosophy, and the operations
of the Fund. The Charter ensures that a donor’s wishes are honored and that
the Fund’s resources are used in support of RLC’s ministry and mission.
The Mission Endowment Fund is maintained as a distinct fund, separate from
RLC’s unified fund and operating budget. Gifts to the Fund are placed in a
designated account managed by an Investment Committee, which is elected by the
Congregation. Members of the Committee are selected based on their financial
background and knowledge of investment dynamics. The Committee oversees the
investment of Fund assets in conservative investment vehicles where the risk
of principal loss is minimal. The Investment Committee serves only to manage
the Fund’s principal and
to generate current income to support Mission Endowment Fund sponsored
projects. Once the Fund achieves a minimum threshold of $250,000, the
Investment Committee will inform RLC’s Parish Planning Council of the interest
income the Fund will make available to support mission opportunities. The PPC
will then evaluate proposed mission projects and activities eligible for
Mission Endowment Fund support, and determine which initiatives are suitable
for funding. Mission Endowment funds will not be used to support normal
operational expenses of the Congregation.
Mission Endowment Fund Size
Since its inception in 1998, the Mission Endowment Fund has grown rapidly. The
Fund is less than $5,000 away from the $250,000 goal which will permit the
Fund to begin its support of mission activities. The successful growth of the
Mission Endowment Fund is the result of major gifts from the estates of Lula
Silverthorn and Steve Westling. Memorials in remembrance of Linda Wilson, Ed
Hoffmann, and other RLC members have also contributed to the Fund’s growth.
These gifts have made the RLC Mission Endowment Fund a reality and the
congregation is blessed by the stewardship demonstrated by all of the Fund’s
donors.
Contributing to the Mission Endowment Fund
Gifts to RLC’s Mission Endowment Fund may come in any size and take many
forms. Listed below are some of the ways you can make a gift to the Mission
Endowment Fund.
• An outright gift of cash, securities, stocks or bonds, or any tangible
financial asset.
• A gift of real estate or property can be made to the Fund. A qualified
appraisal can be obtained to establish a valuation for tax purposes.
• Estate planning gifts designated through wills, living trusts, life
insurance policies, qualified retirement plans (IRA’s and 401-Ks), and various
testamentary trusts.
• Life income agreement gifts - such as charitable gift annuities, pooled
income funds, and charitable remainder trusts - can be employed to meet unique
donor needs.
Fundamentally, the RLC Mission Endowment Fund is an extremely flexible vehicle
which will enable you to make a lasting gift while simultaneously receiving
significant tax advantages. The Fund can easily accommodate any donor gift.
The structure of the gift can be determined through consultation with
qualified financial and legal advisors.
