Creation Care . . . .
Have you noticed our coffee cups on Sunday mornings during our Coffee Time? Members of the Creation Care Ministry Team are helping the environment by keeping 30-60 Styrofoam cups out of the landfill each week by caring for God’s creation through washing coffee cups! Washing the coffee cups is quick and easy when 2 or 3 people do it together. You are welcome to use the industrial dishwasher, however the team has found it is quicker and more environmentally friendly to wash them by hand followed by a dip in diluted bleach water. If you are interested in helping this ministry team continue using porcelain coffee cups on Sunday mornings please contact Norma Blake or Nancy Beedle to sign up for a Sunday of washing coffee cups.

Stephen Ministry
“We’re excited!”
Our congregation’s Stephen Leaders are ready to launch a new training class for Stephen Ministers. If you would like to be a part of this caregiving ministry, there is still time to be included.
Here is what one Stephen Minister has to say about Stephen Ministry:
“I was kind of sitting on the sidelines of our congregation. Oh, I came to church every Sunday, but the rest of the week I was focused on myself. Then Stephen Ministry came along. When I said yes to God’s call to me for that ministry, I saw a lot of changes in my life. Now I’m committed to caring more about others than myself. And, you know what? I’m walking a lot closer with my Lord.”
If you feel God is calling you to take a more active role in Christian caregiving, contact Pastor Dave, Pastor Mitch, or Joanne Daniel, or pick-up an application from the table in the Narthex.
From the Staff . . . .
Dear Resurrection People,
The Life Together Team is currently hard at work on developing goals and objectives as we are now at the transition point of moving from thinking strategically to acting strategically. The team has taken the input from the Legacy Dinner, Evening of Historical Reflection, four World Cafés, Natural Church Development survey, and Percept’s Context survey and report – and have identified four emerging themes to guide us forward in our mission and ministry. The emerging themes are as follows:
Adult Discipleship Development . . . This is a broad category that includes helping people discover their God-given spiritual gifts, talents, and abilities – and then connecting them to a ministry they care about; growth in personal Bible study and prayer disciplines; something similar to the Faith Stepping Stones, but for life stages after the kids graduate from high school; and equipping people to share their faith through the relationships they already have.
Ministry in the Immediate Community . . . Resurrection has a strong history of serving others, but we have primarily done that outside of the Perry Township area. We are seeking ways in which we can make a stronger connection with our immediate community so that we may be a beacon of light to those who live nearest to the congregation.
Communication within the Congregation and the Community . . . Many comments were made during the various events that underscore the importance of communication within the congregation and in the community. This theme includes looking at how we can improve our website, newsletter, bulletin boards, signage, etc. to improve communication.
Address facilities needs . . . Our facilities have been a limiting factor for our ministry for a while now. The Future Facilities Ministry Team (see details elsewhere in this Bell Ringer) has recommended that we stay on this site and expand our facilities to meet the needs of our mission and ministry.
The Life Together Team has set its sights on the June 8 congregation meeting as the time to share the goals and objectives with the congregation for their affirmation. Those goals and objectives will then be matched up to the resources necessary to achieve them, and that will form the basis of the grant request for the implementation phase of the Life Together grant – a $30,000 matching grant to be used in the coming twelve months. The team thanks everyone for their input and suggestions during this process.
Life at RLC . . . .
The Finance Ministry Team is led by our congregation treasurer, David Wantz. The team has worked to organize our corporate records, institute good accounting standards, comply with various local, state, and federal laws, prepare accurate budgets and timely reports, and to ensure the security of our money and property so that this congregation can succeed in its mission and ministry. The contact person is David Wantz (786-6207).
The Discipleship Hour Writing Team prepares the curriculum for ages three through fifth grade for our Sunday Discipleship Hour. This is our fourth year using the Workshop Rotation Model for “Sunday School,” and this year the team prepared eight rotations and the children visited workshops using art, drama, computers, games, movies, science, cooking, and music. The contact person is Julie Peralta (881-7854).
The Life Together Ministry Team is responsible for leading our congregation through the Life Together: Thinking and Acting Strategically grant process – a grant awarded by the Indianapolis Center for Congregations. To date, they have focused on thinking strategically by recalling the past, assessing the present, and discovering the vision. They are now working on goals and objectives that will help us act strategically as we move into the implementation phase of the grant. The contact person is Eric Schilling (364-2103).
The FaithBuilders Team is responsible for overseeing our middle school youth ministry and confirmation program. During this school year, the FaithBuilders have met sixteen times on Sunday evenings to learn more about the Word of God, build relationships, and explore their faith. In addition, they have participated in service projects (such as raking leaves, collecting items for the Humane Society, serving a meal at a homeless shelter) and gathered for fellowship activities (including Trailblazers Weekend at Lutheran Hills, Confirmation Camp at Lake Luther, and the upcoming outing to Kings Island). The contact person is Julie Peralta (881-7854)

Future Facilities Ministry Team Recommendation . . . .
On May 4th, Michael McCarty shared a summary of the activities of the Future Facilities Ministry Team as part of the Life Together presentations during the Discipleship Hour. After thoroughly exploring a number of options, the recommendation of the Future Facilities Ministry Team (FFMT) is that we remain on our current site and focus our efforts on expanding and remodeling our facilities to meet the needs of our mission and ministry. A key component in this proposal is finalizing an acceptable parking agreement for the connection and shared use of our parking and the lot at the northeast corner of Perry Park. A new 30-year lease was signed earlier this year between Indy Parks and the Perry Township School Board that allows for such an agreement.
Michael outlined the formation of five teams to help us move forward:
1. Facilities Development Team – This will be the umbrella team providing oversight for the whole process of expanding our facilities.
2. Building Design Team – This team will work with an architect to develop a facilities master plan.
3. Engineering Team – This team will work with an engineer to develop a plan for connecting our parking lot to the Perry Park lot.
4. Capital Campaign Team – This team will lead the congregation through a capital fund drive to cover the cost of facilities expansion.
5. Construction Team – This team will work with the construction company and help oversee the construction process.
There is an immediate need for the first three teams. The costs associated with developing a master plan for our facilities and a plan for the parking are eligible for inclusion in the implementation phase of the Life Together grant. However, there is a firm deadline of July 24th for the Life Together grant, and that grant request has to include the name of the firm(s) we intend to use and the associated costs.
It is important to note that while the costs of developing these plans may be included in the Life Together grant, we will not move forward in engaging with those firms until we have signed an acceptable agreement regarding the parking. Also, once the building and parking plans are developed, it will require a vote of the congregation to move forward with implementing the plans. Another thing to note is that while a small group with particular interest and expertise may help to select the architect we will use to develop a master plan, the actual design process will likely involve a much larger team and include extensive interaction and input from the whole congregation.
Anyone interested in serving on one of these teams
is encouraged to speak to Michael McCarty or one of the pastors.
Help Grow Our
Small Group Ministry!
In Pastor Dave’s Pentecost sermon, he talked about the spread of the early Christian church, and how it was achieved by small “house churches” led by the laos (Greek: λαός) - the laity - that were given guidance by the Apostles. He compared them to our ChristCare Small Group Ministry today – groups that are transformational small communities of faith, led by laity, where people grow closer in relationship with God and with one another. Throughout the Life Together process, we have heard people talk about a desire to grow deeper in their faith. One of the most consistent means mentioned to bring this about was participation in small groups – and ChristCare groups in particular.
Four new ChristCare groups were formed recently. Plans are underway for some short-term groups (eight sessions) to be formed this fall for the purpose of giving people a sampling of what ChristCare is all about. We are targeting more new groups to form in January, as some existing groups birth and newly trained leaders begin their groups.
ChristCare Leader Training
to Begin in August
As our ChristCare ministry grows, we need to continually train new leaders. Is God calling you to serve as a ChristCare Leader? The next training session will begin after school resumes in August. The ChristCare Leader trainees form a ChristCare group under the leadership of Pastor Mitch that meets for sixteen weeks. Over the course of those weeks, the participants get to experience what life in a ChristCare group is like, as well as receive training in leading a group. This model of training produces capable and confident leaders, even if they have never been in a ChristCare group prior to the training.
More information about leading a ChristCare group and what is involved in the training can be found on the ChristCare bulletin board in the narthex across from the restrooms. If you have any questions about ChristCare or serving as a ChristCare Leader, please talk to Pastor Mitch.

What Your Staff Is “Up To” Beyond the Walls of RLC
God calls us to live out our vocation as Christians in a variety of ways. For many of us, that means finding a fulfilling occupation – our “day job” – and then serving in a local congregation in addition to that. For those who find their occupation in the local congregation, they serve beyond their “day job” by serving the larger church. This is true for our rostered staff at Resurrection. Here are the ways that our staff is serving beyond RLC:
Pastor Dave and Julie Peralta both serve on the Indiana-Kentucky Synod Leadership Support Committee, whose chief role is to plan the annual Professional Leaders Conference at Turkey Run State Park in the fall for all rostered leaders (pastors, associates in ministry, diaconal ministers, and deaconesses) in the synod.
Pastor Dave is also on a special team working on a synodical grant from the Lilly Foundation that focuses on educational indebtedness of pastors. After completing two terms on the Louisville Institute Board, he is now serving as a Louisville Institute Fellow.
Julie Peralta is part of the ELCA Youth Ministry Network and serves on the committee for Region VI (Indiana, Ohio, and lower Michigan).
Pastor Mitch is in his second term having been elected by the Indiana-Kentucky Synod to serve on the Trinity Lutheran Seminary Board (from which both he and Julie Peralta graduated). At their May meeting, he was elected to a two-year term as secretary of the Board. He is also beginning his second term on the IN-KY Synod Campus Ministry Committee, which provides oversight for the five campus ministries of the synod at Ball State, IU, Purdue, Butler, and the Univ. of Kentucky. He continues to serve as chair of the committee.
The Resurrection Mission Stimulus Act of 2008 . . . .
As many RLC households ponder what to do with their “stimulus” checks, all of us, whether we have received checks or not, are invited to use this opportunity – even and perhaps especially in anxious economic times – to reflect on the source of all our blessings.
Let’s have some fun together as a congregation, and challenge each other to discover the joy of the faithful practice of tithing. Every RLC disciple received a letter in May with a listing of the four worthy missions (printed below) in which Resurrection participates. For those who received a check, the invitation is to take at least ten percent of that unexpected check – and return it to the real Giver. Earmark it for a mission that brings you joy by helping to support. Those not receiving checks have even more reason to reflect on the discipleship practice of tithing and are invited to participate as well.
Check out the “thermometer” in the narthex as we keep track of these “unexpected” gifts in a “Stimulus Fund” that we will close by the end of July. During Sundays in June and July, we’ll also hear from representatives of these missions whose work will be “stimulated” and blessed by these unexpected gifts. Let’s see what we can do and catch the communal joy of generous living!

Home Devotions . . . . Ready Click Grow
How to continue strengthening my faith when away from “church” . . . Go to www.rlcindy.org click on Home Devotions in the left column to be redirected to Ready-Click-Grow from the Youth & Family Institute. Here is an example from the Family Faith Adventures – Family Time Faith Adventures: Funny Walking – For families with kids of all ages.
✻ Focus Your family time: There are lots of ways to walk to God.
✻ Before your family activity, write the following descriptions on slips of paper – one item per slip: body builder, ballet dancer, gymnast, old man or old lady, fashion model, toddler, soldier, person walking in the snow, astronaut in space. Then, put all of the slips of paper in a hat or shoebox.
✻ With your family together, ask each person to dip into the hat and take a slip – and then, one at a time, walk like the person they picked, while everyone else tries to guess who the person is walking like.
✻ Customize this activity for your own family: A young child, especially a non-reader, may need to work with an adult who can whisper a suggestion to him. Or – if this can be done with grace and respect and not mockery – family members can imitate the walk of other members of the immediate or extended family.
✻ Wise up - Read:
"Some of the Lord's followers think one day is more important than another. Others think all days are the same. But each of you should make up your own mind. Any followers who count one day more important than another day do it to honor their Lord. And any followers who eat meat give thanks to God, just like the ones who don't eat meat." – Romans 14:5-6
"We must stop judging others. We must also make up our minds not to upset anyone's faith." – Romans 14:13
✻ Ask: What sorts of things do you feel Christians can disagree about or do differently, and still love God and each other?
✻ Say: There's not just one correct way to walk the Christian life – there are lots of ways. Christians who love Jesus worship and witness and pray in all sorts of ways. As long as love is our motivation, the world is wide open with opportunities to be a distinctive Christian with a flavor all our own.
✻ Teaching activity: Talk about ways some of the people you described on the slips of paper could demonstrate their love of God. For instance, how can a Christian fashion model or soldier or ballet dancer let the light of Christ shine in them among those they meet?
✻ Ask: What is your (or our) special kind of Christian walk? Do we know someone who has a Christian walk that is different from ours?
✻ Pray: that your family will remember that God made each person unique; appreciate Christians who live their Christianity differently than you.

Summer D.H. with RLC Kids
Summer is a growing time of light, seed, play, and wonder. In this season, the earth is our teacher. For some people, summer offers rest and renewal. Vacations are planned, not as many meetings are scheduled, and there is the opportunity to pick up that book you have wanted to read.
During this summer we invite you to be a part of the D.H. Kids (3-year olds through 5th graders) Summer Celebration of Abundance. Summer Discipleship Hour begins June 15 with highlights from our VBS week, followed by six weeks of exploring God’s Creation and abundance through computers, movies, art, and games. If you are interested in leading one of these stations for one week or six weeks please contact Margie McCoy or Julie Peralta today!
When vacationing this summer,
please remember to take your
new mailable offering envelope.
And have a good vacation!
B2K . . . .
The next B2K (Birth to Kindergarten) event will be Friday, June 27th, beginning at 6:00pm. Please meet at Perry Park, directly behind the church parking lot, for a pitch-in dinner and fun on the playground. If it rains, we will meet at the church instead. There will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex along with a tree for you to pick a food item to bring with you. As always, older siblings are welcome to join us.
Playtime Port News . . . .
Remember we need many hands to play with our children in the nursery on Sunday mornings! No diaper changing – we have a staff for that! Only playing with the children – reading books, coloring, building blocks, etc. Sign-up on the sheets on the bulletin boards across from the nursery!
