From the Staff . . . .
Dear Resurrection People:
Summer’s Here . . .
I remember when I first started in parish ministry (I cannot believe it will be 25 years ago this June . . . man, time flies when you’re having fun!!!) I was given a file of “general letters” from a retired pastor. They were filed by month, and I soon discovered that he had a basic “form letter” for each season – you know, the December Christmas letter, the September Rally Day letter, and of course, the June letter: “Remember, God doesn’t go on vacation, see you in church, sign up for VBS, keep those pledges coming in, remember we still have our regular bills to pay, etc . . . .”
What Time Is It?
All these years since, I’ve tried to resist writing those kind of “seasonal” reminders. Call me idealistic or naive, but I always have seen power in the wisdom of another kind of “seasonal” rhythm – that of the Church Year. As important as fiscal-year-budgets and school-year-driven-programs are, I believe they take on deeper meaning and significance when they are set within a larger, spiritual picture. How can we see our vacations, programs, ministries and activities fitting into a larger frame of reference than simply “summertime”? What is the Church really about?
A Time to Grow
For centuries, the season after Easter, moving from spring into summer and fall, has been the long, “green, growing” season of Pentecost. After focusing on the life and mission of Christ in the seasons of Advent, Epiphany, Lent and Easter, we now focus on the life and mission of the church. Because God has done all this for us in Christ, what is now our response? What does it mean, really, to be a Christian? How does the Church shape its life and witness?
RLC’s Vision, Mission and Values
In every Sunday’s bulletin, on posters in the hallways, on our website and visitor cards, and in this Bell Ringer, the call of our congregation’s vision, mission, and values are before us. Our vision is to be a people so rooted in the rich soil of God’s grace that we cannot help but to grow – growth being measured in service, in deepening our discipleship, in sharing God’s love. The “4 compass points” of “Welcome, Nurture, Equip, and Serve” help us to focus our mission. As that remains descriptive of our community, we cannot help but to grow in numbers as well.
Critical Growing This Summer
Throughout all these “green” Sundays after Pentecost, in our worship as well as in all of our ministries, we seek the guidance of the Spirit as our congregation grows. Quietly, but steadily, like the corn planted in the fields all around us, I want to call to your attention two particular teams charged with overseeing Resurrection’s growth that are in need of your prayers and support: The Future Facilities Ministry Team and our Congregational Council.
“Support Your FFMT!”
Michael McCarty, Joyce Peterson, Daryl Huber, Tom Myers, Leslie Daugherty, and Brian Hewitt will be engaged in data gathering, brainstorming, and spirited discernment over the weeks of summer into the fall. A written description of their work is printed in this Bell Ringer. Please note this team is not setting directions or making any decisions! That responsibility remains with the Council and the entire congregation. This small group, however, is indeed charged with creatively and carefully thinking through the complex options regarding our future facilities. Therefore, they welcome – indeed require – your input, thoughts, opinions, prayers, and support.
A New Council
After our June congregational meeting, our Council will also welcome your prayers as we begin a critical year ahead, continuing our ministry structure transition and preparing for future facilities. As Michael McCarty and Scott Poore rotate off the Council and put their talents to work in other ministries (see above), we are blessed to have two gifted fellow disciples offering themselves for the work on Council: Dick Benjamin and David Wantz. Dick is a long-time disciple here at Resurrection and has served well in a variety of capacities through the years. David, while newer to RLC, has served congregations as a trustee, a deacon, and teacher and has also been a consultant to the United Methodist Church in Indiana.
At our June meeting we will also have an opportunity to affirm a new configuration of leaders on our Council, as Michael McCarty hands off the office of President to Wendy Messer. Our Treasurer Gary Myers requested a move into the role of Vice-President, which not only enables him to focus on some projects he has in mind for us, but allows him to assist David Wantz into the role of Treasurer. Let me share David’s response to our nominating team:
Thank you for trusting me to be the congregation's treasurer. Fortunately, Ed Kistler's work and Gary Myer's leadership make this a manageable job to step into. I am used to working with not-for-profit budgets and financial decisions. I also understand how sensitive a matter money is to people and organizations. I promise to be honest and open in every way so that you will be confident in our processes and in the way our resources are being used. My sense is that communicating clearly about how we assemble a budget and track it will be one of the more important tasks of the treasurer.
Growing in Grace
So the summer begins, and our ministry of welcoming, nurturing, equipping and serving continues. Oh yes, and as my now-sainted pastor friend would say, “Remember, God doesn’t go on vacation, see you in church, sign up for VBS, keep those pledges coming in, remember we still have our regular bills to pay, etc.”
Growing in Christ,

RLC Congregational Meeting June 4th . . . .
Dear Resurrection People,
We are approaching the one-year anniversary of our formal vote to revamp our ministry structure. With that, you’ll be seeing a bit of a difference in our June semi-annual congregation meeting. We will no longer have bi-annual elections of 60+ people to the Parish Planning Council and Ministry Boards. You will also not see a lengthy bulletin of reports from the various Boards.
With our new ministry structure, we have envisioned the December semi-annual meeting as being guided by the Congregation Council. It will be a time of looking ahead at ministry priorities for the coming year as reflected in that year’s Resource Plan (a.k.a. “the budget”). The June semi-annual meeting will then be guided by the Steering Team. This will be a time to reflect back on the ministry of the program year we are just completing. We want to make the June meeting a time of celebrating what God has been doing in our midst. Another aspect of the June meeting will be to affirm the nominations of two or three people to serve on the Congregation Council for three-year terms. The Council is made up of seven members of the congregation – plus the pastors under full-time call – so most years we will elect two people to council and every third year we will elect three people. The congregation meeting will also affirm the nominations of the slate of officers for a one year term. (You can find information about the nominees on the previous page.)
I want to give you an idea of what you can expect on June 4th with respect to our review of the ministry of the past program year. It has been a year of striving to live into our new ministry structure. There have been some places where the transition has been pretty easy and smooth. There are other places that have been a little bumpy – or flat-out stalled. We know those situations will be worked out – it is simply a matter of working through priorities and how to best allocate our Steering Team resources. I’ve said before, and it is bearing out, that it will take us three to five years before this transition is fully complete and our new ministry structure is humming along. We have been encouraged by what we have seen this year – and we know that we have a ways to go yet.
Our new ministry structure is based on our Mission Statement. Our ministries are grouped into areas that advance our Mission in ways that are Welcoming, Nurturing, Equipping, and Serving. There are two more groups that support our Mission through Caring and Administration. At the congregation meeting, our Steering Team will briefly highlight what has been happening in all of these areas during the past year – with special focus on new ministries that have come about as part of our new ministry structure. The largest portion of our time will be spent in the Serve area as the team of people who have been working on hurricane relieve with Grace Lutheran Church in Long Beach, Mississippi, will share what they have been doing – with a particular focus on telling the story of their Spring Break mission trip.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the June semi-annual meeting. It will be great to share stories of our ministry during the past year and celebrate what God is doing among us.

Traveling this Summer?
Take Your Offering With You
. . . . And then mail it back to RLC!
We know that folks from Resurrection will be traveling all over the country – and the world – this summer. We’d like to have an idea what sorts of places – both the interesting and the mundane – people are visiting this summer. We also know that sometimes people get behind in their offerings when they aren’t here on Sundays during the summer. So, we’d like you to take your offering with you on your summer travels, and then mail it back to church.
Enclosed with this edition of the Bell Ringer is a special envelope in which you can place your offering envelope and then drop in a mailbox wherever your journeys take you. We’ll have a map of the United States in the narthex and we’ll add markers to show where the offerings have come from during the summer. We’ll also attach the envelopes around the map so that we can see all of the postmarks and check-out the stamps. There will be extra envelopes with the map in case you will have the opportunity to mail from more than one place.
Who will send an offering back from the furthest distance away? What will be the most unusual stamp used? Join in the fun and take your offering with you this summer to mail back to us at RLC!
ChristCare Leader Training
to Begin in August
A new training group for ChristCare Small Group Leaders will begin in August just after school resumes. The training is very thorough and comprehensive so that the leaders are fully equipped to begin leading groups. The training group actually forms a ChristCare Group during the training and spends time in each of the four emphases of ChristCare: Community Building & Care; Prayer & Worship; Biblical Equipping; and Missional Service. While each of these areas is sampled on a regular basis, the majority of the time is spent with the training material. Feedback from this style of training (as contrasted with the old model that was more like a classroom) is that even people who have never experienced being in a ChristCare Group feel confident about their readiness to lead a group.
If you have any questions about ChristCare – or have even a hint of interest in training to be a ChristCare Leader – please talk with Pastor Mitch. He will be happy to talk with you about ChristCare and share more information about serving as a ChristCare Leader.
Stephen Ministry Corner . . . .
Twelve New Disciples — Plus One
The Stephen Ministry leader team is pleased to share the news that God has tugged on the hearts of 13 Resurrection members; members who are blessed with gifts of faith, compassion, patience, mercy and encouragement. On May 30, the following will begin their training to become a Stephen Minister. Lois BowserWendy Messer
Linda Biltz Nancy Beedle
Chester Spillman Joyce Spillman
Janet Albaugh Steve Dedert
Louise Eaglesfield Debra O’Brien
Duane Wallin Katie Moll
Jana Forster
The 50 hours of training will be broken down into twenty 2 ½ hour sessions that will be held on Tuesday evenings and during two retreats. Among the training topics are feelings, the art of listening, relating gently and firmly, maintaining boundaries in caregiving, confidentiality, and caring for those experiencing grief or illness. The training, which will be completed by the end of September, will help these disciples provide distinctively Christian caring to those in need.
We give thanks and praise to God for having called these individuals to this caring ministry. Please join us in prayer these next few months. Ask for our loving God’s continued blessing on Resurrection’s Stephen Ministry. Pray with thanksgiving for these folks who will be sacrificing time and energy to learn to be effective Stephen Ministers. Ask that God give them a humble and teachable spirit, and that He give the Stephen leaders the wisdom and discernment they need as they nurture and guide these disciples to give care.
Finally, if you see any of these thirteen, please welcome them to this very important caring ministry. Give them your support and tell them that you are keeping them in your prayers.
Yours in Christ,
Joanne Daniel, Gloria Aplin
Pastor Dave and Pastor Mitch

Discipleship Hour and
RLC Congregation Meeting
On June 4 there will be no Discipleship Hour Classes. In its place RLC will be holding our semi-annual congregational meeting, and we are encouraging all of our children to attend the congregational meeting in the sanctuary. Why!? We feel that this exposure gives them an opportunity to begin understanding how we live out our mission and vision statement. To reinforce this experience . . . they will also be seeing pictures from the Mississippi Mission Trip.
However, if having your children attend a meeting is not possible, a nursery will be provided for children 0-5 years of age along with a movie shown in Seaside Cinema for kindergarten through 3rd graders. Our regularly scheduled D.H. will resume on Sunday, June 11.
What is the Big Bang of the Brain, Life, and Soul?
Curious. . . want to learn more? Come to the Adult Discipleship Hour on Sunday, June 11 and listen to the youth share their thoughts.

Around 10:15am we will gather in a big circle for a closing.
It will take many hands to continue our Discipleship Hour through the summer. If you wish to be a Crew Leader for one, two, or ten weeks please visit the Safe Harbor or contact Ann Buie. The lesson outlines for June 11, 18, and 28 are ready for pick up and are currently located at the Safe Harbor.

D.H. Rigging Day - June 24
What is D.H. Rigging Day you ask? . . . According to Webster’s Dictionary rigging means a network used for support. Networking is exactly what we need to continually enhance Discipleship Hour (D.H.) and the education of our children and adults. Everyone is invited (especially the DH Writing & Operations Teams, past & current Crew Leaders) to our first D.H. Rigging Day on Saturday, June 24 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Here we will discuss what the role of the Shepherd and Crew Leaders are; share thoughts and ideas to improve our 45 - 60 minute D.H. on Sunday mornings; plus outlining the fall rotations. Please R.S.V.P. to Julie Peralta by emailing: julie@rlcindy.org or calling the church office if you are interested in participating in our first D.H. Rigging Day. There will be a continental breakfast and special give-aways!
Future Facilities Ministry Team . . . .
Members: Leslie Daugherty, Brian Hewitt, Daryl Huber, Michael McCarty, Tom Myers, Joyce Peterson, Pr. Dave Schreiber
Charge: To seek God’s will and identify a primary option to address our facilities needs that will permit us to continue to pursue our congregation’s Vision, Mission, and Values Statements.
Situation: Our congregation’s growth has reached a plateau and is now limited by our facilities - with worship and education space of equal concern.
Question: What is the best way to address our ministry facility needs? What do we discern to be God’s will for the future of Resurrection Lutheran Church? How can we best live out our Vision, Mission, and Values Statements with regard to our ministry facilities?
Options: These are but a few of the alternatives. The team should consider all of these, as well as identify and consider others:
Purchase adjacent land and expand current facility . . . . Expand current facility and address resulting parking issue . . . . Relocate to another site and build anew . . . . Purchase another building and relocate . . . . Become a multi-site congregation . . . . Plant a new congregation . . . . Stay where we are and grow deeper rather than larger.
Considerations:
• What counsel does the I-K Synod Director of Outreach have for us and our situation?
• What counsel can we get from the ELCA churchwide offices?
• Do any neighboring synods have congregations who have been in similar situations?
• Is the park land adjacent to ours available for purchase?
• If we can purchase adjacent land, is that the best option for future growth?
• Will this location become undesirable due to atrophy and decay of the neighborhood?
• What are our current demographics? • What are our long-term facility needs?
• How are our households distributed in the surrounding area?
• How has the growth of RLC compared to the population growth in the area?
• What considerations are there concerning neighboring ELCA congregations?
Timeline:
• Through the spring and summer the team should gather information and consult with those who may be able to provide counsel.
• Plan to present a recommendation to the congregation at the December semi-annual meeting.
• Provide opportunities to the congregation through the fall for input and to discuss the recommendation prior to the semi-annual meeting.
