From the Staff . . . .

Dear Resurrection Disciples,

I just deleted the first, uncompleted attempt at this newsletter article. I’ve decided that fewer words and a more direct approach is called for . . . .

Here is what I believe . . . .

God has called and gifted each one of us for ministry – by virtue of our baptism, we have been ordained (“set aside”) to play a role in realizing God’s vision for the world.

This also I believe . . . .

My role as a pastor – in fact, a key responsibility of all church staff – is to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4). I am called – not to do ministry for others – but to help others do the ministry to which God has called them.

And one more thing I believe . . . .

It is a pretty much hit and miss proposition to find the ministry to which God has called you – UNLESS you enter into a discovery process to learn about your God-given spiritual gifts and how God has shaped you for ministry.

Here’s our dilemma . . . .

For several years we have been striving to realize the vision that at RLC people find their place in ministry based on their gifts, rather than “filling slots.” We want to get to a place where when we talk about a particular ministry, we talk not only about what they are called to do, but also describe the spiritual gifts we believe would be particularly helpful for that ministry. The challenge has been reaching a critical mass within the congregation of people who are conversant in the language of spiritual gifts and who have an understanding of their own giftedness.

So here is what we are going to do . . . .

During the month of September, we are going to work together – our entire community of faith – to better understand spiritual gifts in general, and to discover our own giftedness in particular. Some folks already have a good sense of this, but we want to do this together as one body – for the sake of our community of faith – for the sake of the community around us – for the sake of each individual disciple at RLC.

Here are the specifics . . . .

During worship on the first weekend in September, every confirmed disciple at RLC will fill out a spiritual gifts inventory and then score it at home during the following week in preparation for the next weekend.

During worship on the second weekend in September, we will reflect on the gifts God has entrusted to us, and as an act of worship, offer them to God that they may be used to realize God’s vision for our lives.

Each Sunday during the Discipleship Hour – and on the Monday and Tuesday evenings following – will be part of a series of four “SHAPE Sessions” where we will engage in four additional discovery exercises that will help to give a fuller picture of how God has SHAPEd us for ministry through our Spiritual gifts, Heart,

Abilities, Passion, and Experiences. You are free to mix and match Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays in order to take part in all four SHAPE sessions.

Why are we doing this?

The Life Together grant process has made it clear that God has great things in store for our congregation. It is imperative that as we move forward, each person discovers their best-fit ministry so that together we may bring to reality the vision God has for us. We can think of no better way to achieve this than by helping each person discover how God has SHAPEd them for ministry. We are fortunate that the Life Together grant can make this all possible.

Please join us!

I cannot more strongly urge everyone to take an active part in this spiritual gifts emphasis during September. I believe that it will help you to better discern God’s call in your life. Some of you already have a pretty good idea about that – and I would still encourage you to take part, not only for your own further discernment, but also to help encourage others in our community of faith. I am really looking forward to the month of September and the far-reaching impact this spiritual gifts emphasis will have for us – individually and as a community of faith.

Life Together Update

As this edition of the Bell Ringer is “heading to press,” the Life Together Team is working to finalize the application for the implementation phase of the Life Together grant. Some of the key elements include:

    ■       Engaging an architect to enter into a master planning process for our facilities

    ■       The September spiritual gifts emphasis which will help people find their best-fit ministry as we move forward

    ■       Curriculum resources for adult faith formation

    ■       Communications consulting – including the launch of a new RLC website

Life at RLC . . . .

We are a Resurrection people . . . .

A welcoming community of faith so deeply rooted in God’s grace that we are freed to boldly live out our faith . . . joyfully serving others, sharing the love of God, and growing in discipleship together.

Resurrection Mission Moments . . . .

The Discipleship Hour Operations Ministry Team ensures the continuation of the Sunday morning learning hour for children ages 3 through fifth grade. This fall begins the fifth year of rotation “Sunday School.” Over fifty different people have ministered to the children of Resurrection through teaching, shepherding, and being present on Sunday morning. The team also plans the annual Bon Voyage kicking off the year and selects a charitable organization for Discipleship Hour offerings – this year they will benefit Heifer International. The contact persons are Margie McCoy (883-4049) and Julie Peralta (881-7854).

The Senior Adult Ministry Team (aka SAM’s Club) provides Christian fellowship for all adult members and friends. Opportunities to share faith and love of Christ are present at monthly events either at church or in the community around us. Activities have included touring historic gardens, parks, and buildings, and enjoying game nights, sing-alongs, and pitch-in dinners. The contact persons are Betty Hewitt (888-8232) and John Moe (888-2647).

F.S.S. #3: Entry into School . . . .

All parents and their children who will be entering Kindergarten this Fall are invited to participate in a special “Entry into School” Faith Stepping Stone. Faith Stepping Stones is a process that bonds parents and children into the body of Christ at crucial moments in parenting and leads them to incubate faith every night in every home. The Faith Stepping Stone Team would love for you to join us during the 9:30am Discipleship Hour on the following Sundays – September 7, 14, 21, & 28. The Blessing Service will be on Sunday, September 28. If you have questions please contact Julie Peralta: julie@rlcindy.org.

F.S.S. #4: My Bible . . . .

If you will be in the 3rd grade this fall, we invite you and your parents to attend a fun-filled eight week Discipleship Hour time together learning to highlight your new Bible! We will begin meeting on Sunday, September 7th at 9:30am and will conclude Sunday, October 26th. Then during a worship service parents will present the kids their highlighted Bibles. Look for details to come via mail from Julie Peralta.

F.S.S. #7: Confirmation . . . .

The Faith Stepping Stone #7 group (confirmands, parents, & mentors) will meet on Sunday, September 7 during the 9:30am Discipleship Hour. F.S.S. #8: Graduation . . . .

Time is ticking on your final year of high school and we want to help you make the most of it. Seniors and parents join us for the Faith Stepping Stone: Graduation as we look at the past, present, and future on Sunday, November 16 from 9:15-10:30am. Our first session will help you and your family look back at the blessings God has given you and look to the present to set a plan to take advantage of your remaining time together. We will close Graduation with a blessing at the altar in worship to send you, the graduate, into the next chapter of your life.

Altar Guild & Assisting Ministers

“Well, I’d like to do _______(fill in the blank), but I don’t know how . . . .”

One of the many things we learned during our World Cafe’s this past year was that a good number of folks are interested and willing to serve in various ministries, but never step forward because they feel inadequate or ill-equipped to “do” ministry.

On October 4th the “MEE!” will focus on two worship ministries associated with “WELCOME all people into the Body of Christ,” our Altar Guild and Lay Assisting Ministers.

Would you like to be an absolutely vital – though largely unseen – part of our weekly celebration of Holy Communion? Do you wonder who prepares and takes care of the bread, wine, communion ware and cloths?

Or, in a more visible role, have you ever wanted to help lead the congregation in worship as one of the lay assisting ministers, reading prayers, assisting the pastors and helping with the distribution of communion?

Then come to the “MEE!” on October 4th! Questions? Want to know more about Altar Guild or what Assisting Ministers do first? Contact Pr. Dave or Sherry Andersen.

Adult Discipleship Hour

Coming Later This Fall

While “Discovering our Spiritual Gifts” is September’s congregation-wide emphasis, with the “SHAPE” spiritual gift course the only adult class on Sundays at 9:30, watch for these multiple offerings later this Fall:

Faith & Politics ‘08 How can we as Lutheran Christians avoid twin traps of either checking our faith at the poll booth door, or assuming that God is either Republican or Democrat?

The Bible: Book of Faith The ELCA is launching this fall an excellent series of resources designed for novice and passionate Bible students alike, aimed at deepening our knowledge of and love for Holy Scriptures.

Lutheranism 101 An inquirer’s class in the basics of the Christian faith, as we Lutherans articulate and live the Gospel, both in our daily lives and together as a church.

CreationCare Resurrection’s CreationCare Ministry team will continue to offer practical help on sustainable “green” living, motivated by faithful stewardship.

Heifer’s Hope for the Future Campaign from 2000 to 2010 will help one million families – that’s 4.5 million men, women, boys, and girls – to receive animals, including pass-ons, and training in environmentally sound farming, improved animal management, gender equity and community development.

Visit the Safe Harbor for more information about the Heifer Project.

We will meet one Sunday each month (usually the third Sunday) beginning in October. Activities for the fall / winter include going to a pumpkin patch, swimming at Indy Island, bowling, and much more! By not beginning in September, we encourage all the families to instead enjoy the weekend at the Olivet Retreat. Stay tuned for more information regarding Kids Club as we get closer to October!

Join Us at Play-Time Port . . .

Play-Time Port is the area we call our nursery on Sunday mornings. We have paid staff that are present from 7:50am-12:15pm (following the last worship service). However, they cannot be the only hands, eyes, and ears! All time in the Play-Time Port is time together – playing, reading, holding, watching.

As you play together with the children (NO-diaper changing) rejoice in the good God who gave you this opportunity of investing in the child’s spiritual growth. Talk about God during your play through reading stories or singing songs. This is a time for church and God to become a real comfort for little ones, especially as they learn to separate themselves from their primary care-giver. It’s a place to become awed by the wonder of God through these little creations called babies and toddlers.

Remember to sign-up on the bulletin board across from Play-Time Port to take time playing, reading, holding, and watching these little ones during worship or Discipleship Hour (Sunday School) on Sunday mornings.
