LUTHERAN CHURCHES PRESENT

LUTHER: The Movie

A Special Screening at the Historic

Artcraft Theatre in Downtown Franklin

Reformation Sunday, October 28th

Doors Open at 5:30pm

$5 Admission includes popcorn & drinks!

Starring Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) as Martin Luther, this 2003 international release also features such stars as Alfred Molina, Claire Cox and Peter Ustinov. Called “a sweeping, stirring epic” by the Chicago Sun-Times, “engrossing, compelling and powerful” by Movieguide, this feature film produced in part by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans traces the history of the Reformation. From the DVD cover: “Regional princes and the powerful Church wield a fast, firm and merciless grip on 16th century Germany. But when Martin Luther issues a shocking challenge to their authority, the people declare him their new leader – and hero. Even when threatened by violent death, Luther refuses to back down, sparking a bloody revolution that shakes the entire continent to its core.”

An optional time for discussion will follow the screening.  Film rated PG-13 for disturbing images of violence.

From the Staff . . . .

Dear Resurrection People,

It is good to be back from sabbatical! I certainly missed being an active part of this community of faith for the last three months. A few folks have asked if I dreaded coming back. No – I was quite ready. Sure, there are a number of projects around our house that I could have tackled given a few more weeks, but I was eager to return and again add my contribution to this place called Resurrection.

Thank You!

I’m sure that I will say it many times in the weeks and months to come, but I want to make sure every one of you hears me say “Thank You!” at least a couple of times. This summer of sabbatical was a wonderful gift of grace to me and my family. We were able to do things together that we don’t normally have time to do – and thanks to the sabbatical grant, we were able to do things we could not normally afford to do.

Someone asked on my first evening back what was the most rewarding part of the sabbatical. Without a doubt, it was the time spent with Charisse and Hayley without church responsibilities looming over my shoulder. It was doing things together that will provide memories for a lifetime. It was watching Hayley – who will turn nine about the time this issue of the Bellringer is printed – experience the magic of two places as divergent as Holden Village and Disney World.

We will have stories to share for quite some time. They will leak into my sermons on occasion. There was laughter and tears, joys and fears. And for three wonderful months, I was able to focus on connecting with my family and with God, confident that everything was just fine back at RLC and that you all could carry on without me.

The first six weeks of the sabbatical was quite a whirlwind – only five nights in our own beds! The first week we went to California to visit my sister’s family. Lisa married one of my seminary classmates – so with two pastor’s families, we are lucky if we get to see each other once a year. Then we went to Seattle, where John Moe’s brother, Dick, was able to get us in to tour the studio of glass artist Dale Chihuly, the creator of the Fireworks of Glass at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. That was quite an experience as we got to see them making pieces for another sculpture, learn a little about teamwork in that setting, and see some of the incredible things Dale Chihuly collects.

Then it was on to Holden Village for two weeks. Holden Village is a former copper mining company town in the Northern Cascade Mountains in Washington. The village buildings are the

original ones from when the mine was active from 1937 to 1957. This is an extremely remote (a #10 on the forest service’s scale of 1 to 10), self-sustaining community. It is a place of peace and beauty, a place of renewal and learning, a place of encounters with God. We would love to go back in a couple of years and have some other families from Resurrection experience it with us.

On the way back from Holden, we spent a day sightseeing in Seattle. Then we were home for a few nights before going to Columbus, Ohio to visit my mother and brother. A couple more nights at home and then it was off to Florida where we got to spend a couple of days with my grandmother who will turn 90 this fall.

We then made our first visit as a family to Disney World. This was a great age for Hayley to make her first visit to that world of magic. The sabbatical grant allowed me to attend a 3½ day seminar at the Disney Institute – “The Disney Approach to Leadership Excellence” – and enabled us to be there long enough that we could take a relatively relaxed approach to exploring what Disney World has to offer. It was very interesting for me to be able to experience Disney World as a guest – as a consumer – and also spend time in sessions with Disney insiders and learn about how they pursue their business of making magic. Some of the sights and sounds we saw there – and the look on my daughter’s face and her squeals of delight – will be forever etched in my memory.

After Disney, we landed in our own beds for about a week. Then we spent most of a week on the beach in Michigan City with Charisse’s family. Her parents are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary this year and they rented a house for the whole family – all 20 of us. There was one more trip to Columbus over Labor Day to visit with my family again. On that trip I hauled along the computer I built as part of the sabbatical grant in order to show it to my brother and begin editing the video we shot this summer. I left a DVD with my mother with video and pictures of all of her grandkids.

When I met with my spiritual director between Holden and Disney, I laughed and joked that there had been encounters with God all over the place at Holden, but I didn’t expect the same thing to happen at Disney. I was wrong. I heard God speaking loud and clear several times during sessions at the Disney Institute. I have much to reflect on and think about from this time of sabbatical – and over time, I will share it with all of you. But, as I am running out of space here, I will say one more time – but not for the last time! – Thank You! to everyone who made it possible for us to experience this wonderful time together! It is good to be back!

Future Facilities Ministry Team . . . .

Last month, at the Sept. 23rd 9:30 Discipleship Hour, we hope that many of you were able to attend that forum presented by both our Future Facilities Ministry Team (“FFMT”) and our “Life Together” strategic planning team. We all had both a chance to listen to updates and ask questions about what we have been doing. Basically, the “FFMT” continues to examine pros and cons and the attending details of what we have called “stay/go” alternatives.

In addressing the “Go” option, while being open, thinking “outside the box” and looking at alternative sites, we have continued to encounter many difficulties related to moving the congregation to a new location, not the least of which are extraordinary land prices (especially for parcels nearer to our current location), combined with considerable building costs.

On the “Stay” side, we continue to look at the cost/long-term benefit of expansion, especially as it relates to parking issues – can we justify expanding if it inordinately constricts our parking? Those of you at the forum saw a “revised” drawing of a thinner strip of the Perry Park land that, while not optimal, would, we think, be adequate for expanded facilities parking.

We were glad to learn, then, that we have been invited by the Perry Township school board to present this idea at an open public forum the Board is hosting on Monday evening, October 22nd, at the Southport High School Auditorium (time TBA). There will obviously be other items on the agenda, but the future of Perry Park (owned by the school district, leased in the past to Indianapolis City Parks) is one of those agenda items. We would like to present our proposal to purchase this thinner strip of land that would leave the “soccer field” intact. We believe this solution will not only provide the additional parking we need, but will also provide accessible parking to the Park not currently available to the public, and satisfy community residents who have mistakenly feared our intent to destroy the Park. As we all know, we highly value this green space that our own children and youth use frequently. We have always believed this to be a win-win solution for us, the Park, the School district, and the community.

We continue to invite anyone to speak with us about ideas, dreams, brainstorms, concerns!

Caring Ministry Workshop at RLC . . . .

Caring Ministry Worshop

Saturday, October 13, 2007

9:00am-1:00pm

(Registration begins at 8:00am)

Have you ever thought you really didn’t understand Resurrection’s Stephen Ministry program? Have you wondered just what the training to become a Stephen Minister is all about? Have you felt God might be calling you to be a Stephen Minister, but you aren’t certain? Or would you simply like to learn how to reach out to others and be an effective listener?

On Saturday, October 13, you will have a unique opportunity to discover the answers to those questions. Stephen Ministries St. Louis will be sponsoring a half-day Caring Ministry Workshop in the Fellowship Hall at Resurrection.

Pam Montgomery, a dynamic, enthusiastic and entertaining speaker, will not only offer information concerning the Stephen Ministry program, but will lead two actual Stephen Ministry practice sessions. In the first, “Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief,” participants will learn about the stages of grief and how to minister to people in each of those stages. In another session, participants will learn what makes Christian caring unique and how they can use resources like prayer, blessings and scripture in their caring for others.

Invitations to attend this workshop have been extended to approximately 500 other churches in the Indianapolis area. It will also be announced in local newspapers and other media. While there is a charge for this workshop, as a member of Resurrection, you can attend it without cost. We encourage you, however, to sign-up for it ahead of time so that enough materials are available for everyone. To do so, just contact the church office (881-7854) or Gloria Aplin (535-5648) or Joanne Daniel (888-0138).     See you there!

Volunteers Needed for Caring Ministry Workshop

The success of any workshop depends not only on those organizing and presenting it, but also on those people behind the scenes who make everything possible. Volunteers are needed to set up tables, serve refreshments, greet participants and help them register, hand out materials and staff information tables. Some of the work can be done the night before, some briefly on the morning of the workshop and some at various times between 7:30am and 1:00pm on the day of the workshop.

If you are interested in helping with any of these functions or can lend a hand on Saturday, October 13, please contact Gloria Aplin (535-5648), Joanne Daniel (888-0138) or the church office (881-7854).

Thanks! We appreciate any assistance you might give us. – Joanne & Gloria

S.S. Discipleship

October Rotation . . . .

The S.S. Discipleship will continue sailing through the Gospel of Luke in October studying Jesus’ love for everyone including outcasts. Then we will discover that when we show a wholehearted response to God’s love, such as by being thankful and worshiping, we become closer to God. If you are interested in assisting children through this rotation that begins on September 30 and concludes on October 28 please visit the Discipleship Hour Operations Team (DHOT) at the Safe Harbor on Sunday mornings.

Passing on the Faith . . . .

Meal time is one opportunity for passing on stories; however this is hardly easy in our culture where meal time has become, for many, no little more than a time for ingesting food and moving on to the next thing. But meal time still can offer a potential which few other social gatherings have: the fulfillment of several vital human needs at one time and place (satisfy hunger, place your lives in God’s hands through the table grace and prayer, find out what’s going on in others’ lives, practice table and other social etiquette, learn and practice the skills of food preparation). During the month of October strive to have a few meal times together to not only satisfy hunger, but spend time together with God in prayer and conversation.

Faith Stepping Stone 4:

S.S.Discipleship Offering . . . .

During the long dry season, when their rainwater-collecting urns and cisterns were dry, the 6,000 community members of Kakinzi, Uganda had one source of water – a small muddy pond. The diseases caused by contaminated water are a key factor in infant and child mortality and low life expectancy. The average life expectancy in Uganda is 43 to 46 years, and 82 of every 1,000 children die before they reach their first birthday.

The Kakinzi community, however, is among the lucky half of the Uganda population now using improved drinking water sources. Gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal helped ELCA partner Lutheran World Relief bring a water reservoir and a safe water supply to the whole community.

Over the next months the Discipleship Hour Offering will go to dig a well ($1,000) for a community. However, it would be awesome if we could build a community irrigation system ($5,000). Remember to pick-up an envelope at the Safe Harbor to place in the offering plate during worship.
