November Discipleship Hour . . . .

3-year-olds through 12th graders will be discussing “Kids Money & Stuff.” During the month of November they will receive their own offering envelopes to be placed in the offering plates during worship service. This will help our children become a part of stewardship at RLC. The funds collected through these offering envelopes will be designated to support our sponsor child in Columbia, South America, Juan Carlos. To learn more about Juan Carlos visit the Safe Harbor outside the youth room.

We will also be making quilts to send to Pr. Barb at Grace Lutheran in Long Beach, Mississippi to distribute to hurricane victims.

From the Staff . . . .

Dear Resurrection friends,

Walk the Talk -Talk the Walk?

What’s more important? Belief or action? Proper doctrine or godly living? How do you get into heaven? Is it by what you have done or thanks to what God has done?

Luther’s Legacy

Most of you will be reading these words on the weekend of Oct. 30th, when we celebrate Reformation Sunday. “We are saved not by our works, but by the gift of God’s grace, through faith in Christ.” Martin Luther championed this central truth of the Christian faith, a truth that had been obscured by misguided practices of the church of his day. These practices said one’s actions and behavior – “good works” – are what saves a person. Luther insisted that it always boils down to the gift of God’s grace.

Faithful Practices

Luther never said, however, that good works were optional! He spoke of “faith active in love,” and said it was “impossible to separate works from faith, as impossible to separate heat and light from fire.” His point was that Christian behavior sprung from belief and deep faith in God.

PoWeR SuRGe Marks

Here at RLC, the “PoWeR SuRGe” marks of discipleship articulate some of the practices of faith that help bridge the gap between belief and behaviors. We certainly do not view these practices as a list of achievements that “save” a person, nor religious rules that separate spiritually superior persons. In fact, the more the marks are practiced, greater is the sense and expression of humility and gratitude to God. When the desire to live all of life is based on faith in the grace, love and forgiveness of God, any self-righteous claim of spiritual perfection disappears.

Real Faith for Real Life

So, as we visit once again these “marks of discipleship” this fall, the point is not that disciples expect to be perfect. Disciples, however, do expect to live close to God! Our sermon series assumes that followers of Jesus want to learn, to grow, and enjoy an ever-deeper connection to the source of abundant life. That is what the “PoWeR SuRGe” marks of discipleship are all about. Practicing them does not make one perfect. Rather, practice makes progress.

Real Thanks

Our Reformation heritage says that faith and life grow out of our response to the gift of God’s grace. All of life, in essence, is a “great thanksgiving” for all that God has done for us. It is very appropriate, then, that our fall “Real Faith for Real Life” series will end with a stewardship emphasis we will call “Real Thanks!” As we head into November and are mindful of all of our blessings, we engage in a very “Lutheran” stewardship appeal that focuses not on budgets, obligations or rules, but on faithful practice, a grace-filled mark of discipleship, rooted in thanksgiving, that helps us bridge the gap between belief and behavior.

                                                                Growing in Discipleship,

Men’s Breakfast & Bible Study

The session for November 12th Men's Breakfast and Bible Study is entitled "The Seriousness of Support.” The key verse is Proverbs 17:17 – A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

      Goals for Growth are:

       Realize that personal support

is vital for men.

       Identify the kinds of support

each man needs.

Examine our willingness to be available

to other men as a source of support.

The Breakfast starts at 7:30am and the Study at 8:00am. All men are welcome, so come and bring a friend!

Why attend

Discipleship Hour? . . . .

Some folks are of the opinion that Discipleship Hour is only for children. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Discipleship Hour provides an important place for many things in the lives of children, youth, and adults. It is a time to dig deeper into the Word of God, become more knowledgeable, gain more strength, have a place to belong, pray, and find a place to serve!

SAM’s Club

The Senor Adult Ministry (SAM’s Club) invites all seniors to attend a game night at church on Monday, November 21 at 7:00pm. Bring a game you like, or play Euchre, Uno or Dominoes with your RLC friends. Dessert will be served after the games.

Mark your calendar for 7:00pm, Nov. 21 – come and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship!

Fall Worship Series . . . .

Our worship series will continue through Nov. 20th to focus on the six “PoWeR SuRGe” Marks of Discipleship. Weekly devotions are included in each week’s bulletin.

Real Thanks Celebration

November 19 & 20

Mark your calendar for our Real Thanks celebration

 the weekend of November 19 & 20.

There will be a catered meal after each worship service.

We will be collecting reservations so that we can tell the caterer how many people to expect at each meal.

Through this fall, we have been focusing on the marks of discipleship as we journey through the “Real Faith, Real Life” series in worship. This has been a time of reflecting on our relationship with God and how we can grow in discipleship. The series will conclude on the weekend of November 19 & 20 as we focus on the last mark of discipleship: Giving of our time, talent, and treasure. With that being the weekend before Thanksgiving, we want to conclude this series by celebrating not only the relationship God calls us into, but also all of the blessings that God entrusts to us in our lives.

We will make our thanksgiving concrete in two ways. First, we will collect our Estimates of Giving for the coming year as an act of worship, thereby demonstrating not only our thanks to God for providing for our needs, but also expressing our trust that God will continue to provide. And second, we will gather in the fellowship hall after each worship service for a catered Real Thanks celebration. These meals will be a time for us to share in fellowship and celebrate all that God has been doing in our midst.

Plan to join in the celebration by joining us in worship

and at a celebration meal on November 19th or 20th!

Pictorial Directory Update

Good news! Our directory design team has finished creating what looks to be an incredible layout and now all is in the hands of Olan Mills. The finished directories should be here around Thanksgiving, give or take a week.      I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the entire pictorial directory team for a lot of hard work, many hours of organization and calling, and patience when we hit a snag or two.

Big thanks go out as well to Townsend Schnabel, Don Fisher, and Pastor Mitch for completing the very time-consuming job of designing the directory layout.

Special thanks go to Diana Deitch, Flo Hoffmann, Charles and Mary Matsumoto, Beth Mansfield, Joanne Sheidelmeier, Jean Canter, Betty Hewitt, and Jill Raufeisen for planning, organizing, and leading various teams through the process (if I missed someone, I deeply apologize). Thanks to Susan Garten for answering many phone calls about cancellations, reschedules, and general directory questions.

Although I don’t know everyone who helped cover various host/ess shifts, who made follow-up phone calls, or who helped with the scheduling process, please know that your help was very much appreciated and I thank you very, very much!

Once you receive your directory, please take the time to thank those who were instrumental in making it a wonderful success. They deserve it!

                                   Peace, Stacie Fruth
