Regular/Semi-Annual Meeting of the Congregation of
Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church
June 1, 2003 at 9:30am
The Process is Drawing to a Close!
May 3
Vision and Mission Statement
All Congregation Event
The cottage meetings are complete and a summary is now available. Nearly 150 people participated in the cottage meetings to talk about their vision for the future of RLC, what they felt we should be doing in mission and ministry, and where we need to make some investment of time and dollars in order to support our vision.
Everyone is invited to the concluding event on Saturday, May 3, beginning at 9:00am and concluding around noon. Child care will be provided. We will begin by responding to Pastor Dave’s proposed Vision Statement. Then we will work at refining a Mission Statement. Anyone who would like to try their hand at a draft of a Mission Statement is asked to give it (or e-mail it) to one of the pastors by Wednesday, April 30th. If time allows, we will also discuss the core values of the congregation as they were identified in the cottage meetings. When we are finished, we should have proposed Vision, Mission, and Values Statements to share with the congregation in anticipation of their approval at the June 1 Congregational Meeting.
From the Staff . . .
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.
Romans 12:3-5
Dear Resurrection People,
Do Life! Ubuntu is the theme of the ELCA National Youth Gathering that will attended by 11 senior high youth from Resurrection. This gathering will be held on July 16-20 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ubuntu is a word from the Bantu language of Africa, which roughly translated means "humanity.” It carries with it the concept that in order to be fully human, one must be in community: "I am because we are." No one can be human alone.
Archbishop Desmond TuTu states this in regard to his understanding of Ubuntu: "We find that we are placed in a delicate network of vital relationship with the Divine, with my fellow human beings and with the rest of creation….We are meant then to live as members of one family, the human family exhibiting a rich diversity of attributes and gifts in our differing cultures as members of different races and coming from different milieus – and precisely because of this diversity, made for interdependence."
Ubuntu is the theme of the National Youth Gathering but it could also be a theme for Resurrection Lutheran Church as well. We are a place where one finds relationship with God and with others in a community of faith. We are not walking our faith journey alone. We are walking and growing in our faith as we walk together, as we work together, and we worship together. My faith has been strengthened because I have been in this community. I am who I am because of who each one of you has been to me.
As we journey through this Easter season together, let us encourage and lift each other up, so that we may all be strengthened in our faith and "do life" as each of us has been called to do.
Men’s Breakfast
& Bible Study
Beginning on May 10, the Men’s Breakfast will begin to focus on “Hot Issues” of today. We will discuss these issues while looking at the church-wide opinion and that of our own synod.
On May 10 we will begin with a conversation on war.
Future topics include:
Business Ethics
Poverty
Racial Divide
Hypocrisy
Treatment of Women
Materialism
Intolerance
Sexuality
The Breakfast begins at 7:30am with a hot meal and concludes at 9:00am after the Bible Study.
All are welcome to attend. Check the bulletin for exact details the Sunday before the second Saturday of the month.
Father/Son
(Miniature)
GOLF
Outing
Attention all men and boys of the congregation: Come join us for a Father/Son Golf Outing on June 1st at Rustic Gardens (on Arlington near Southeastern). It is technically miniature golf, but it’s not like Putt Putt. It’s much grander. And you don’t need to be a good golfer! You don’t even need your own clubs! Cost will be around $5 a person. “Tee Time” is 2pm. Please use the yellow response form in the bulletin to sign-up. Call Penny Welch if you have questions (861-3948).
Youth Group Sells Pizza
Looking for a creative way to celebrate Mother’s Day? Give mom a break from cooking. Take her out for lunch and then bring home a pizza or two to eat that night. It would be one of the most thoughtful gifts you could give her. Why not buy a couple extra and throw them in the freezer to give her a break on more days than just Mother’s Day.
The Senior High Youth will be having a pizza fund-raiser on Sunday, May 11 for the National Youth Gathering trip in July. We will begin taking orders on Sunday, April 27 and continue through May 11. Place your order and we will have your pizza(s) ready to be picked up after the worship service on May 11.

Hymns & Songs of Faith:
The Message and the Music
On May 4 our member and retired pastor, John Moe, will continue the Sunday morning Adult Education discussion on hymns. We are looking at a variety of the hymns of our faith and how the message of hymns speak to us as Christians. We sing the hymn with guitar accompaniment, and then talk about the message. John has chosen a variety of hymns from different backgrounds and sources that deal with different themes such as grace, forgiveness, hope, God’s peace, God’s love, assurance and others. We are also looking at how the scriptures are reflected in the words.

Indpls. Campus Ministry Representative Here May 18
On Sunday, May 18, we will welcome to RLC Betty Landis, the interim campus minister for Indianapolis Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry. Betty will present a brief chapel talk at each service and then participate in an open forum in the sanctuary during the Sunday School hour. She will share some of the story of Lutheran campus ministry in Indianapolis as well as the exciting developments as we begin partnering with the Episcopalians to work together on campus ministry.
The possibility of RLC’s involvement with campus ministry -- especially at the University of Indianapolis -- will certainly come up somewhere in the conversation. Everyone is invited to join in the conversation -- whether campus ministry was a significant experience for you, you have a child or you work on a campus, or if you might be interested in supporting or serving in campus ministry.
Betty has been serving our synod as interim campus minister for the past year. She will be leaving that position soon as she enrolls in Clinical Pastoral Education in preparation for attending one of our Lutheran seminaries this fall.

Many Thanks . . . .
Special thanks to all those of you who helped make our latest blood drive a success. Twenty-nine people either signed up or stopped by during the drive. Of those, nineteen were able to make a donation. Each unit of blood, because it can be separated into four components, can help up to four different hospital patients. Just think! Resurrection’s blood drive may have saved as many as 76 lives!
If you were one of those who wanted to give, but for some reason was unable to do so, don’t be disheartened. This does not mean that you will never be able to give blood. Moreover, your effort did not go unnoticed by either the blood mobile or myself. Resurrection “gets credit” for all those who attempt to be a donor. Thank you for trying.
I also wish to recognize all of you who donate blood on a regular basis, but just not at Resurrection. The key is the giving, not where you make the donation.
Finally, my special thanks to Lori Edelman, Tracy Kryger and Susan Garten, for their help before and during the blood drive.
So, again, thanks everyone for a successful drive, and remember to mark your calendars for JUNE 29, our next blood drive.
