From the Staff . . . .
Dear Resurrection People:
Lent means Spring?
The word Lent comes from an old English word meaning “to lengthen,” naming the time of the year when – at least in the Northern Hemisphere – the days begin to get longer, signaling the coming of spring. After the cold, dark and often dismal months of winter come the signs of renewal. The calendar year thus aids the liturgical year. As people begin to feel the “itch” for renewal and recreation following the grey days of winter, so the church is stirred into action and renewal in the season of Lent.
The Cross of Christ
In order for our action to be more than mere activity and busy-ness, however, Lent is a season that brings the Church back to the center core of Christian faith and life. We are confronted with the reality of our sin, our human brokenness, and our mortality. We are reminded that nothing else in this life can answer those deepest needs, let alone save us. We are driven to the Good News of God’s forgiving, healing, life-giving love in Christ Jesus. It is the power of the Cross and the promise of the Resurrection that is motivating center of all of the Church’s action and renewal.
So Whatsup this Lent?
Prayer, worship, reading scripture, service, life-enhancing relationships, and acts of gracious giving – because we have been given so much – again shape our Lenten life together. Ash Wednesday begins a special season of mid-week worship on Wednesday evenings, where together with other Southside Lutheran Churches, we return to the life-giving cross. Our Lenten Film Festival (Saturdays at 6:30pm) “crosses” the theme of community in contemporary cinema with the Gospel. Sundays at 9:30am all are encouraged to discover their own unique spiritual gifts in Resurrection Life Course III. This special class is precisely designed for “action and renewal” as each participant learns to identify, celebrate and put to use the special gifts that God has given them. There is much more.
Future Facilities Ministry Team and Council
RLC’s leaders continue to be active as they look to our congregation’s future. Feb. 24th the Council and the “FFMT” met with Pastor Stan Peterson, who had facilitated the January “Exploring Your Expectations” workshop. We read through the transcript of over 40 pages of conversation from that day (thank-you Michelle Dew!), as well as evaluated the “ranking survey” of expectations and hopes that all the participants contributed. We will be sharing some of our learnings with you in the coming weeks. An encouraging sign of our congregation’s spiritual health was the clear priority that emerged from the workshop that issues of facilities, building, moving or not, etc., while important, are penultimate to our call to be a Gospel-centered community of disciples, engaged in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are clearly a “Resurrection People” who desire to “major in the majors” and “minor in the minors!”
The FFMT had also met this past month with Pat Dever, a consultant with the ELCA Mission Investment Fund. Pat had been involved with our building project 10 years ago, was familiar with our situation, and was extremely helpful in encouraging us to continue collecting data for any number of options. She affirmed our commitment to not rush into pre-ordained decisions, and gave us good direction in the kinds of information we need to be about gathering.
RLC Awarded Life Together Grant!
Of course, many of you know by now the very good news that Resurrection has been named to be one of the 30 congregations in central Indiana to participate in the Life Together Initiative: Thinking and Acting Strategically. This is a new grant initiative funded by the Indianapolis Center for Congregations (a Lilly Endowment venture) which, in addition to matching funds up to $30,000, provides excellent educational resources and coaching for congregations like ours going through growth and transition. As the Life Together website itself puts it: “Before wonderful things can happen in a congregation, there is deep thought, conversation about identity, discernment regarding faith, and hours spent figuring out the best organizational structure for new programs. This is what Life Together is all about. It is strategic planning and much more.”
Advent and Epiphany Prayer to . . . .
I am grateful that so many of you have shared with me that you have taken very seriously my encouragement to be in intentional prayer over these past weeks – from our Advent “silence” in the wake of learning the neighboring land would not be for sale, to these weeks of Epiphany, as many of us have prayed daily simply for the “light” of God’s wisdom to lead us into the future. These spiritual disciplines have great power when we, as a community, engage in them together. It is no small part, I believe, of why we are now blessed by resources like the Indianapolis Center for Congregations. So again, as our Council, Future Facilities Ministry Team, and the Life Together project team continue in this new year to gather data, articulate options, and begin to weigh pros and cons of various scenarios of wisely and faithfully meeting our space limitations, we still need, first of all, all of us to be in daily prayer.
. . . . the Heart of Lent
Those prayers, of course, will be joined together with actions of conversation, input, feedback, listening, and more discerning conversation. As we learn in the next weeks how the Life Together strategic planning project will help guide us through this process, we will be in regular and continuous communication with all of Resurrection. As always, please be welcomed to speak with any of our Council, FFMT, or Life Together leaders. But more than anything, in these Lenten days, let us all renew our faith and life by returning again to the heart and center of our faith . . . . Jesus Christ, our Crucified and Risen Lord and Savior.

1992 Oscar Nomination, Golden Globe Best Screenplay
Directed by Lawrence Kasdan; Starring Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, Steve Martin, Mary McDonnell, Mary-Louise Parker
How are we connected to one another? Do our choices in life matter to each other?
Six residents from different backgrounds in modern-day Los Angeles find their lives intersecting, including the unlikely friendship of two men from different races and classes brought together when one finds himself in jeopardy in the other's rough neighborhood. Lawrence Kasdan, director of The Big Chill, revolves this story around a similar question: Am I doing the right thing? As the characters connect, interact, and influence each other, new possibilities are born. Gradually, the future begins to look different.
March 10, 6:30pm
“March of the Penquins” (rated G - some intense nature situations)
2006 Oscar Best Documentary; “Camie” for Character and Morality in Entertainment
Directed by Luc Jaquet; Narration by Morgan Freeman
In the harshest place on Earth, love finds a way
The amazing cycle of life of Emperor penguins is shown in this wonderful documentary. Every autumn, these animals leave the safety of the ocean and march together as a single community. Guided by instinct, by the otherworldly radiance of the Southern Cross, they head unerringly for their traditional breeding ground where – after a ritual courtship of intricate dances and delicate maneuvering, accompanied by a cacophony of ecstatic song – they will pair off into monogamous couples and mate. Later, their progeny go to the ocean, where they stay for four years, and when they reach their adult life, they follow the same pattern of their parents.
March 17, 6:30pm
“Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”
(Rated PG for battle sequences and frightening moments)
Three 2006 Oscar nominations; 2006 “Camie”; multiple science fiction/fantasy awards
Directed by Andrew Adamson; Starring Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Tilda Swinton, Liam Neeson
Some journeys take us far from home. Some adventures lead us to our destiny.
Based on the classic novel by CS Lewis. Four London children are sent to a professors country home for protection during World War II. There they find a magic wardrobe which leads to a mystical snowy land called Narnia, mired in a never-ending winter where Christmas never comes, thanks to the magic of an evil witch. To defeat her and rescue the enslaved creatures of Narnia, they must engage the battle between good and evil, joining forces with Aslan, the great and terrifying lion, learning the meaning of family, love, sacrifice, and community.
March 24, 6:30pm
“An Inconvenient Truth” (Rated PG for mild thematic elements)
2006 Oscar nomination; multiple awards for Best Documentary of 2006
Directed by Davis Guggenheim; Narrated by Al Gore
A Global Warning: What Role do we Play in the Community of Earth?
Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with former Vice-President Al Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. Presenting the case in a thoughtful, engaging style that belies the basic powerpoint presentation at its core, the film is not a screed of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share. Regardless of politics or opinion, the film forces the viewer to consider the wider community of God’s creation.
March 31, 6:30pm
“Babel” (Rated R for violence, some graphic nudity, sexual content, some drug use)
Seven 2007 Oscar nominations, Golden Globe Best Picture, multiple awards
Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Bernal, Koji Yakusho, Adriana Barraza, Rinko Kikuchi
If you Want to be Understood . . . . Listen
Four families in four countries on three continents find their lives connected in a multidimensional story that engages the senses, startles the mind, and engenders within our consciousness an appreciation for small acts of kindness and compassion in a world filled with hatred, violence, confusion, dread, suffering and loss. This extraordinary film is the third in a trilogy by Inarritu that includes Amores Perros and 21 Grams.

Ever Wondered about
Your Spiritual Gifts?
Then join us for Resurrection Life Course III: Discovering How God has SHAPEd You for Ministry. This six-session course began on February 25th and meets in the sanctuary during the Discipleship Hour. In this course we will learn about your God-given SHAPE - Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. The course builds from week to week, but if you missed the first session, you can still join us for the remaining weeks. The concluding weeks will focus on using our SHAPE insights to discern where God may be calling us to serve in the ministries of Resurrection or beyond. If you have any questions about this course, contact Pastor Mitch or Ann Buie.
Calling All Spiritual Gifts Course Alumni!
You are welcome to join us during RLC III for a refresher. The course began on Feb. 25th and will run for six weeks. Of particular interest to you will be the final three weeks (March 18, 25, April 1). We are revamping the order of the course to allow more time in the last three sessions to focus on discerning where God may be calling you to serve in ministry. We are revising the Ministry Description Catalog to correlate with our new ministry team structure, so that resource will be even more useful in helping you see which ministries might make best use of your spiritual gifts. The last three weeks will allow time for both small and large group discussion as well as the possibility of one-on-one time with the course leaders. If you are searching for a new place to serve in ministry, or have remaining questions about how you can apply your spiritual gifts, please join us.

Kastner and Virginia Cook, remind our
children and their families of their baptismal
birthday. Hung in the child’s room, it
encourages children to ask about their
baptism and daily reminds them that they
belong to Jesus. Thank you so much to Carol
and Virginia for making these beautiful
banners! The following five symbols are used on
banners: •Butterfly: Just as an ugly worm enters a
cocoon and emerges as a butterfly, so we
were born in an ugly state of sin. Through
baptism, we are transformed into God’s
own children. •Shell: The shell with three droplets
represents the pouring out of the New
Life and the presence of the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit. •Pomegranate: The pomegranate is a
symbol of the Communion of Saints. The
tiny, innumerable seeds are enclosed in
one shell; yet, they are eaten individually.
So we, the innumerable members of the
Christ, are one in Christ; yet each of us
contributes individually to the Family of
God. (I Corinthians 12) •Tree of Life: The Tree of Life represents
the many-faceted life of each Christian.
The leaves and fruits are the results of the
constant nourishment with the Means of
Grace: God’s Word, Holy Baptism, and
the Lord’s Supper. • Dove: The Dove is a Christian symbol
representing the Holy Spirit’s presence at
Jesus’ baptism. Likewise, the Holy Spirit
enters our heart in the Sacrament of Holy
Baptism. Youth News . . . .
