From the Staff . . . .
Dear Resurrection People,
From Darkness to Light
The days of Advent this past December seemed to me to be the darkest I can ever recall. Perhaps it was the “daylight savings time” change or even the weather, but as winter approached and we moved through the days closer to Christmas, the night seemed to come earlier and earlier. Then we gathered in festive worship on that holy night, a sea of candles lit in the darkened sanctuary, singing “yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting light. . . the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” So now we continue to move through the winter, into this New Year and into the season of Epiphany, and though the night comes just as early, I sense there is light indeed all around.
Epiphany is the season of light in the midst of the darkness. The light of the star first leads the Magi to the infant Jesus, and then, in the following weeks, we continue to “see the light” as the identity of Jesus is revealed in each Sunday’s Gospel lesson, Jesus’ true light being made manifest to an ever-widening circle. “The glory of the Lord shall be revealed,” and all people shall see it together. Epiphany is often a season of emphasizing mission, as the light of the star and the glory of God shine on us and in us and through us, bringing light to our darkness, revealing the all-encompassing and ever-widening sphere of God’s love and compassion. The people who walked in darkness have indeed seen a great light.
From Silence to Speech
Last month I suggested in this newsletter that we all use the days of Advent to “shut up and pray.” What I meant by that phrase was an attempt to stress the critical need in prayer to be first in the stance of a listener, to nurture an attitude of quiet and focused attention simply on the presence of God, rather than to be driven by our own agenda and wordy petitions for God to answer our own demands. The occasion, of course, was just learning that the land next to us was not going to be available for sale after all. It was a disappointment to our future plans – what should we do now? It seemed to me that first, before anything, we were being called to do nothing but pray, to be sure that before any actions or deliberations, we all would be focused on being sure we would be in touch with the presence and power of God. Prayer, at its best, is just as much, if not more, listening to God speak to us, than listening to ourselves speak to God!
Daily Texts 2007
I have been helped in my own prayer life to grow in this discipline by centering prayer and Lectio Divina, which are simple practices of quieting meditation and praying the words of Scripture. Once again this year, Resurrection is giving each household a complementary copy of Daily Texts 2007, which includes a more detailed guide to “praying the scripture.” If you have not picked up your copy yet, it is in your parish mailbox. Additional copies may be ordered from Mt. Carmel ministries at www.dailytext.com, where you may also register to receive daily e-mails of these texts that can be blessed guides for your daily prayer, giving divine “speech” to your own prayer life.
Where Does the Light Lead Us?
It is time for another movement from silence to speech, however, in our own prayers. As the Magi were guided by the star to their destination, so are we in need to be led by the light of God’s wisdom into our future. As our Council and Future Facilities Ministry Team continue in this new year to gather data, articulate options, and begin to weigh pros and cons of various scenarios of wisely and faithfully meeting our space limitations, we need all of your prayers to move into the more specific speech of asking God to lead us. Yet even so, our prayer might be more faithful and effective if we first, for this season of Epiphany, do not jump to our own agendas and wordy descriptions: “God, should we stay and build the best we can, or should we move, or should we do this or that, or what about this...?” Rather, I suggest all of us be in focused prayer, simply asking God to lead us.
From Community to Commitment: EYE Workshop, Life Together, etc.
Part of our motivation for observing the 40 Days of Community last fall was to recognize and celebrate the strength of the gift of community that we experience here at Resurrection, anticipating the choices and decisions that will be coming before us throughout this coming year. Our sense of mission and ministry at RLC commits us to do the very best we can, and in that light we are making use of every excellent resource available. Elsewhere in this Bell Ringer, please read about the “EYE Workshop” on Saturday, January 20th. We’d like as many people as possible to participate in this event. Our Council and FFMT will also be applying in January to a new grant initiative sponsored by Indianapolis Center for Congregations, called “Life Together.” 30 congregations will receive matching funds up to $35,000 and individualized consultation aimed to help vital congregations who find themselves in a crossroads, needing to think strategically and faithfully together in order to best move into the future. Does that sound like us or what?
As we will proclaim loud and strong in these Epiphany days, the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, indeed, and all people shall see it together. Let the light of Christ shine!

Partners In Grace
Spring Mission Trip
The Partners In Grace team is in the planning process of organizing another trip to Pass Christian, Mississippi, during spring break, March 30 – April 8, 2007. (Note that this does coincide with Holy Week, as Easter Sunday is April 8th.) There are three areas where volunteers are needed:
1. Work with area contractors on construction projects
2. Assisting the elderly with house cleaning chores
3. Assisting at the Grey Hut with phone and clerical duties
If you and/or your family are interested in participating in this trip, please contact Byron Daugherty at 882-7291 or Joyce Peterson at 887-1899, or you can indicate your interest on the yellow sheet when it appears in the Sunday worship bulletin.
Book Drive Update
Thank you to everyone who donated items to the Long Beach Library book drive. Thank you, too, to the Greenwood Public Library for their donation of books left from their warehouse sale. We currently have 73 cartons of materials with 3,000+ books plus the media resources!
In October we delivered 6 cartons of book sale items and another 6 boxes of reading resources that is being used both at the LB Library and in one of the elementary schools. Cash donations are being used to purchase the award winning series books for their children’s section. We are still awaiting word of the move-in date to the Library building and will arrange for the books to be delivered at that time.
A book plate was placed in the books: “This book is given to the Gulf Coast Community by friends from Resurrection Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, Indiana.” The following verse was included: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ . . . ” Gal. 6:2. This is truly an example of how we can be “Partners in Grace” with a community that has suffered such a great loss.
– Joyce Peterson, Book Drive Chairperson.

F.S.S. #1: Raising a Baby . . . .
All families with babies (0-18 months), anticipating a birth, or adoption are invited to participate in three sessions during January on physical, emotional and spiritual needs of infants and their parents. Parents also learn how to do a nightly blessing as a family faith practice. Please join the F.S.S. team for three sessions in the Fellowship Hall during Discipleship Hour (January 7, 14, & 21 at 9:30-10:30am). Your babies are invited to come or spend time playing/sleeping in the RLC Playtime Port (nursery). The Faith Stepping Stone Blessing Service will be on Sunday, January 28.
What? Babies in big church?
Although it may not suit everyone, for some parents and churches, it works. It is important for children to learn to sit quietly and to learn how to worship as a family. Some families bring quiet toys and simple snacks like Cheerios to keep them occupied, and over the course of time children will learn how to worship. However, there are times our hands are full and we need assistance.
We are blessed to have a paid staffed nursery (Playtime Port) on Sunday mornings to assist families with their children (0-5 year olds). Within the last month our Playtime Port has been equipped with a paging system. The paging system helps our Playtime Port staff to “call” for assistance while still providing a safe environment for our children.
Our Nursery Volunteers . . . .
Thank you for your ministry during the Holidays at RLC’s Playtime Port! We continually need many hands to play, read, cuddle, and be present with our little ones in the nursery to assist the paid staff. The more hands we have to assist means we are essentially providing a safer and caring nursery environment for our little ones and families.
The RLC nursery is staffed on Sunday mornings from 8:00am thru 12:00pm. If you are interested in ministering to our little ones, please sign-up on the bulletin board across from the nursery in the narthex.
B2K Pitch-in . . . .
We will be having a pitch-in dinner on Sunday, January 14th, from 4-6:30pm in the RLC Fellowship Hall. There will be crafts and other activities for the children and parents to do together. We will eat dinner at 5:30pm. The main dish (chicken) and beverages will be provided, please bring an item to share based on the first letter of your last name:
A-I Salad; J-R Side Dish; S-Z Dessert.
B2K is for all families with children ages birth to kindergarten. Older siblings are welcome to come to all B2K events. See you on Sunday, January 14th!
Just a friendly reminder during the cold and flu season, for your child to utilize the nursery they must be fever free for 24 hours. This will help prevent other children, volunteers, and staff members from becoming ill. Thank you.
FAITH STEPPING STONES - The Eight Stones
Brought to you from Faith Inkubators the creators of the FaithBuilders Confirmation Curriculum.
Faith Stepping Stones re-visions the “traditional” faith practice of weekly worship and Sunday School to a natural process that takes place every night in every home, with parents equipped to be the faith mentors, augmenting the worship and Discipleship Hour experience. Faith formation does not happen in a vacuum, nor does it happen over night. It needs to be nurtured over time. Faith Stepping Stones is one opportunity to provide faith-based parenting education from cradle to graduation through a series of eight short-courses. Each course is designed to bring parents and children together for fun and learning; ending at the altar with a special blessing service.
The courses are not designed as “Parenting 101" classes – instead they are intended to provide parenting information. We are providing parents with information that will help to guide them as they raise their children in faith. The Faith Stepping Stones ministry gifts the families with a combination of effective parenting information and simple faith practices designed to help parents nurture the faith of their children.
A description of the eight stones along with course dates are as follows:
Stone 1: Raising a Baby (0-18 months, anticipating a birth or adoption)
Three (3) sessions on physical, emotional and spiritual needs of infants and their parents. Parents are also taught how to do a nightly blessing as a family faith practice. Scheduled for January 7, 14, & 21. Blessing service will be January 28.
Stone 2: Raising a Toddler (2-3 year olds)
Three (3) sessions on physical, emotional and spiritual needs of toddlers and their parents. Parents are taught to add prayer to the nightly blessing as a faith practice. Scheduled for April 15, 22, & 29. Blessing service will be May 6.
Stone 3: Entry Into School (4-5 year olds)
Three (3) sessions on physical, emotional and spiritual needs of children entering into school and their parents. Parents are taught to share Highs & Lows with their children, and add it to their nightly prayers and blessing. Scheduled for August.
Stone 4: My Bible (3rd graders)
Eight (8) sessions highlighting 120 key verses in young readers’ Bibles. Youth and parents commit to read a Bible verse nightly, and continue with Highs & Lows, prayer and blessing nightly. Scheduled for September-October.
Stone 5: Livin’ Forgiven (4th graders)
Three (3) sessions from Passover to Lord’s Supper with nightly confession and absolution added to the faith practices of Bible reading, Highs & Lows, prayer and blessing. Scheduled for Friday/Saturday, March 16 & 17 (not a lock-in).
Stone 6: Surviving Adolescence (5th graders)
Three (3) sessions on “Surviving Adolescence” where youth and parents learn and commit to the art of theological reflection and adding this to the previous faith practices of confession/absolution, Bible reading, Highs & Lows, prayer and blessing continue. Scheduled for Friday/Saturday, February 2 & 3 (not a lock-in). The Blessing Service will be February 11.
Stone 7: Confirmation (9th graders)
Three (3) sessions where youth and parents look at their confession, their confirmation, and their call, along with writing their Statements of Faith. Scheduled for three sessions spread from May through September with the Blessing Service on the first Sunday in October.
Stone 8: Graduation Blessing (12th graders)
Three (3) sessions spread over the fall, winter, and spring where seniors and their parents look back on God’s blessings, look forward to graduation, and look to the future of their new callings. Session 2 scheduled: January 28; session 3 scheduled March 25; the Blessing Service will be April 28.
Faith Stepping Stones can be a powerful and effective building block in an overall family ministry strategy, but it cannot accomplish our congregation’s family ministry objectives alone. We will continue to build in this area with Faith Stepping Stones serving in partnership with the Discipleship Hour, worship, Vacation Bible School, church camp, pilgrimage adventure, the ELCA National Youth Gathering, and mission trip opportunities for our children, youth, and the whole people of Resurrection Lutheran Church.
Youth Discipleship Hour . . . .
Three-year-olds through 5th graders . . . . It’s a Miracle
In the Bible there are many stories about miracles. During the January rotation the younger children will be exploring a few of these miracles with special emphasis given to the miracle when Jesus changes water to wine (John 2:1-11). Come join us beginning January 7 for four weeks exploring the miracle and celebrating the wedding at Cana through drama, cooking, computers, movies, art, and science.
Beginning in January the children will gather in the fellowship hall for an Opening (instead of a Closing); after about 10 minutes the children will go to their designated station for the morning; Discipleship Hour will be dismissed at 10:30am. For everyone’s safety, children in the first grade and younger will not be allowed to leave the classroom without a parental/guardian picking them up following Discipleship Hour.
FaithBuilders . . . . Exploring Media
Beginning in January Faith Builders will be exploring and evaluating media – uses and abuses. Discussing what we watch and listen too, how does it all relate to me as a Christian.
Youth Group . . . . Velvet Elvis – Repainting the Christian Faith
Beginning in January, the Youth Group will be exploring Rob Bell’s book Velvet Elvis – Repainting the Christian Faith. “We have to test everything. I thank God for anybody anywhere who is pointing people to the mysteries of God. But those people would all tell you to think long and hard about what they are saying and doing and creating. Test it. Probe it. Do that to this book.” – Rob Bell. Copies of the book may be picked up from Julie for $10. Feel free to read the entire book over Christmas break or read for our weekly discussions in January bringing your thoughts and questions. Join the adults in the fellowship hall on Sunday, January 28 for a college panel discussion.
Thank you
December Crew Leaders . . . .
Hats off and special thanks to our crew leaders in December: Lynn Wolff, Ann Buie, Kyle McDonough, Tom Thaman, Kim Dunn, Michelle Dew, Joanne Scheidelmeier, and Scott Deitch.
Youth News . . . .
This summer eighteen youth and six adults from Resurrection Lutheran Church will be traveling to Oklahoma to take part in a mission trip with Group Workcamps. Since 1977, Group Workcamps has been bringing enthusiastic teenagers into communities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada to help needy families rebuild their homes – and their lives.
On Sunday, April 22 we will be conducting a live auction to support our youth attending the Group Workcamps, other trips and another organization to be named (i.e. World Hunger, Lutheran Disaster Relief, etc.) We will be requesting donations that we would be able to use in our auction. Resurrection held their last auction in 2004 and the response was wonderful. If you have items to donate or wish to review a list of suggestions, please contact Julie Peralta at the church office: 317.881.7854 or email: julie@rlcindy.org.
F.S.S. #8: Graduation . . . .
All Seniors and Parents are invited to our second Sunday brunch together on January 28 from 9:00-10:30am in the RLC Fellowship Hall. During the morning we will have a guest from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Mark your calendar and email julie@rlcindy.org with your R.S.V.P.
What does it mean to attend a Lutheran college?
Why would I consider a Lutheran college or university? Why would I consider higher education? Join us during the weekend of January 27/28 to explore these questions and more.
Bob White, the Director of Church Relations at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, will be present during all three worship services and Discipleship Hour to assist in answering these and more questions. All are invited to join Bob White and members of RLC for a panel discussion about higher education – when to begin planning, how to decide where to go, determining if college is for me or not, and more. A light-continental breakfast will be provided in the Fellowship Hall during our conversation.

Jan. 7 The Year of Saint Luke - An Overview of the 3rd Gospel
During year “C” of the three-year lectionary, with the exception of a few Sundays in the season of Easter when we hear from John, all of our Gospel readings from now to next Advent will come from Luke. Who was this Gentile doctor who authored the Book of Acts as well? What distinctive voice or perspective will we hear throughout the year as we listen to Luke week after week? Pr. Mitch will lead us through an overview of the third Gospel, with special attention to uniquely Lukan themes we will hear over the course of the seasons of this new church year.

Jan. 14 Meet the New Hymnal (part II): The Liturgy of the Church
Last month our music staff and pastors took us on a whirlwind tour through the brand-new “cranberry” ELCA hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship, focusing on the hymns and songs. Today we will focus on the liturgical section, highlighting the theology behind our worship and noting some minor changes in some liturgical texts shared with other Christian denominations. We’ll also hear and sing some of the wonderful new musical settings for Communion, as well as listen to some of the new contemporary settings. Come and take home a CD to familiarize yourself with these musical settings as we look to introduce the ELW next month. (In the Sanctuary)
Jan. 21 Faith Stepping Stones . . . .
Over the past year we have been implementing the Faith Stepping Stones (FSS). What are these Faith Stepping Stones we keep hearing about and are my children involved? Join the FSS Team for an informal discussion Stepping through the Year. Learn about the different stones, faith practices, who are they for, and when do they meet. Faith practices are not only for families with children, they are for all of us.

Jan. 28 ELCA Colleges . . . .
Every other year we are inviting guests from one of the 28 ELCA Colleges and Universities to come share with RLC insights why higher education is important to Lutherans. Jan 28th we will be having “Breakfast with Bob.” Bob White, Director of Church Relations at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio will be having an informal discussion about our ELCA Colleges and Universities along with a panel group made up of RLC members who are on the staff or faculty at local colleges and universities. Please join us to learn more about how we can support our young people. (In the Fellowship Hall)
ChristCare
Small Group Ministry Update
In January, three new ChristCare Groups will launch as their leaders are commissioned in worship on January 21st. Brief sketches of these groups can be found on the next page. You may contact any of these leaders if you are interested in joining their group. You can also check out the ChristCare display in the narthex to see if there is space available in either these new groups or any of our continuing groups.
What is ChristCare?
ChristCare is a system for directing, supporting, and leading small group ministry. A ChristCare group is a circle of care with Christ at the center. Each group consists of 4-12 people and is facilitated by a ChristCare Leader who has participated in 40 hours of training. ChristCare Groups will usually meet twice a month for 90 minutes.
There are four essential elements of ChristCare Groups. The first two are typical of small group ministries: Community Building & Care and Prayer & Worship. Each ChristCare group seeks to be a community of God’s grace where the group members care for each other, share life’s joys and sorrows, and pray together.
The remaining elements are what make these groups distinctively ChristCare groups. Biblical Equipping is a unique approach to Bible study that takes place both within the group and apart from the group. This helps people to explore what the Bible meant to the first hearers, connect it to our lives today, and then use it as a guide in our lives between group meetings.
The final essential element of ChristCare is Missional Service. Each ChristCare group needs to have a purpose and focus beyond the group, otherwise they become self-centered and lose sight of the purpose of sharing the love of God with people beyond the group. Missional Service can take many forms. Some examples include: serving a meal on a regular basis at a homeless shelter or the Ronald McDonald House; staffing an after-school tutoring program; visiting homebound members of the congregation; handling childcare for another ChristCare group; or providing meals for families with new babies.
Thank You! to these ChristCare Leaders who are completing their ministry . . . .
Wendy Messer and Karen Oster have led groups for over four years, including during the 40 Days of Purpose and 40 Days of Community. They are taking a much-deserved break from ChristCare leadership and are exploring other areas of ministry. Chad Frahm has led a group for nearly two years. He has taken a new job in the Chicago area. We wish Chad & Jennifer, and little John, Godspeed as they seek out a new community of faith.

Mark Your Calendar for the EYE Workshop
January 20th – 9:00am to 1:00pm
What is it?
The Exploring Your Expectations Workshop is presented by the Indiana-Kentucky Synod through trained facilitators. The goal is to guide participants through a process that explores their expectations for their congregation, especially during times of transition or change.
Who should participate?
In a word – EVERYONE! We want a wide cross-section of our congregation to participate and are encouraging everyone to reserve the date on your calendar. The more people who participate, the more beneficial the workshop. We need both young and old, longer-tenured and newer members, life-long Lutherans and those who grew up in other denominations. All of your expectations influence the ministry of RLC.
Why are we doing this?
Many congregations take part in this workshop during a pastoral vacancy. No, our pastors are not leaving – and we don’t want to wait until they do in order to take part in this very beneficial experience. We have asked retired pastor Stan Peterson to lead this workshop for us to help us talk about our expectations for Resurrection Lutheran Church as we think about our needs regarding ministries and facilities. Pastor Peterson is familiar with RLC through serving as Pastor Dave’s spiritual director for a number of years – and was his special guest back in August when we celebrated Pastor Dave’s 25th ordination anniversary and 15 years at RLC.
What else should I know?
We will include a simple lunch as part of the workshop. Childcare will be provided. The event will include plenty of interaction, discussion, and sharing of ideas.
