Each Kit will contain 1 pencil sharpener, 10 #2 pencils, one box of 24 crayons, 1 pr. of small blunt tip scissors, one large eraser, 1 ruler with inch and centimeter markings, 10 sheets of colored construction paper and one spiral notebook with at least 150 pages. From the Staff . . . .

Dear Resurrection People:

A Cruise Adventure

To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, LuAnn and I took our first-ever cruise. It’s been a couple of years now, but I still remember the giddy feeling we had, boarding the ship, seeing all the excited people, anticipating the adventure to Alaska’s Glacier Bay. I also remember watching all the crew, busily loading pallets of food and supplies below, quietly serving guests all around us, and then thinking about all the unseen crew tending to safety and navigation, preparing all the inner workings of the ship.

RLC Bon Voyage August 20

We mark another program year of our Resurrection adventure, journeying together in faith, as we celebrate our annual rally-Sunday “Bon Voyage” on August 20th. I still get a little giddy and excited whenever I walk down the hall to our children’s classrooms, decked out in cruise-theme as the “S.S. Discipleship” – not because it reminds me of an ocean cruise, but because our rotation-model Sunday School is doing such a superb job of nurturing and equipping our children for the journey of life under Christ. I also marvel at all the unseen work that is being done even as I write this, by a gifted and giving crew under the direction of “Captain” Julie.

Another 25th Anniversary

The Sunday before, of course, I am told that you all are going to throw a little party for the 25th anniversary of my ordination into the pastoral ministry. Bishop Stuck will be present, as well as a few other friends and family members, but I am delighted that the “flavor” of the day is simply good-old Resurrection fellowship, and that this celebration is with you. The last 15 of those 25 years I have been privileged and blessed to serve among you fellow disciples of Jesus at RLC, and it continues to be an amazing and wonderful journey!

We’re Better Together

In fact, what gets me giddy right now is thinking about the adventure that is before us as a community of God’s people. Obviously Resurrection has seen some significant numerical and spiritual growth in the past number of years, but I believe the best is yet to come. I serve with a great staff team, we have scores of excellent leaders, we have a dedicated crew....and there are a lot of folks on Indy’s southside who have no idea about this wonderful adventure of living in God’s love...don’t you want to get them on board?

40 Days of Community

As we “set sail” this year I think it’s especially important to know that we are better together, that the community that Christ creates in this place is critical for our journey. Later this year we may have some important decisions before us (land??? build??) that will require us to truly work together. “Community” in Christ is central to RLC’s vision and mission. Later this fall, then, we’ll follow up the “40 Days of Purpose” many of us experienced a few years ago with a specially-adapted-for-Resurrection version of “40 Days of Community.” Details will follow, but it will be a marvelous experience of celebrating and deepening our sense and purpose of community here at Resurrection. It’s a cruise you won’t want to miss!!

In Christ,

Stephen Ministry Corner . . . .

Although you haven’t heard much lately about Resurrection’s Stephen Ministry program, much is happening “behind the scenes.” Our trainees, who are more than half way through their 50 hours of training, are working diligently to learn how to be effective Stephen Ministers. Their preparation involves pre-class reading assignments and in-class lecture, discussion and role playing in topics such as listening and maintaining confidentiality. Resurrection member Gail Bennett, who has been a Stephen Ministry leader elsewhere, has shared her gifts and skills in teaching, by helping us (Joanne, Gloria, Pastor Dave & Pastor Mitch) lead some of the weekly classes. The entire class has enjoyed her insight and encouragement. Thank you, Gail!

Stephen Ministry, however, does not begin or end with our Stephen Ministers. You, the members of Resurrection, are an integral part of this ministry. It cannot work well without you. As you will soon learn in the coming weeks and months, this ministry will be an important way we at Resurrection can care for ourselves and one another.

We all are the eyes and ears of Jesus on earth today. As such, we watch and listen to the people around us, recognizing when they have needs for care. If the need is greater than one can personally provide, you will soon be able to tell them about our Stephen Ministers and encourage them to request the distinctively Christian caring of one of them.

When you are the one encountering a time of difficulty or stress or loneliness, you need only ask for a Stephen Minister to share that journey. God did not intend for us to be independent; we were created to be interdependent. Our trained Stephen Ministers will walk with you on your journey to restored wholeness.

So, please continue to support this ministry with your prayers and encouragement. Also watch for further information about how you can request a Stephen Minister or refer another to the ministry.

                                                                      Your Stephen Ministry Leaders:

Joanne Daniel, Gloria Aplin,

                                                                      Pastor Dave & Pastor Mitch

RLC Annual Golf Outing

Saturday, September 16 is the date for RLC’s annual golf outing. The Steve Westling Memorial has been renamed – it is now known as the Resurrection Lutheran Church Golf Outing to Benefit the Good Samaritan Fund. The purpose remains the same: to benefit those in financial crisis resulting from unusually high medical bills. This is the fourth annual benefit tournament. The previous outings have raised a total of $38,000.

The family we are assisting this year is The Sherck Family, a family from Muncie. In 2004, their son Malachi had surgery for an intestinal blockage. Due to difficulties following the surgery, Malachi has since had a partial liver and bowel transplant. The medical bills have been a tremendous burden to the family. Additional information about Malachi can be found on his website:

                                                       http://www.caringbridge.org/cb/inputSiteName.do?method

                                                       =search&siteName=malachisherck

We are soliciting individuals or foursomes to play golf at a donation of $85 per person, hole sponsors at $150 per hole, in-kind donations for our prize pool, or just a monetary gift to the fund. Registration forms are available in the Narthex. You may complete and mail the form as indicated (on the form) or turn-in to the church office.

For those unfamiliar with this outing, it is a Florida scramble type format with a shotgun start. There will be gifts for participants, drawings for prizes, a hole in one contest on one par three, closest to the pin contests on other par threes, a skins contest, and, of course, prizes to the winners. Check-in starts at 1:00pm, with our tee time set for 2:00pm at Valle Vista Golf Club on East Main Street in Greenwood. Dinner in one of the conference center banquet halls immediately follows golf.

If you have any questions, feel free to talk to a member of the Golf Committee: Dick Benjamin, Scott Buie, Greg Crow, Dale Duckworth, Jim Locke, Michael McCarty, or Ron Tatum.

Mark your calendar for a good time and a good cause.

We will be joined in worship by Bishop Jim Stuck, with whom Pastor Dave served for seven years in Michigan City. Following the second worship service (around noon) we will have a celebration luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. As part of the luncheon, a small number of friends and colleagues will share some special memories, stories, and appreciation for Pastor Dave’s faithful service. You may RSVP for the luncheon by turning-in a bulletin yellow response form, or calling Susan at the church office.

Resurrection Life Course 1

Led by Pr. Dave in the Sanctuary

9:30 Discipleship Hour, Aug. 20 - Sept. 24

Do you know someone spiritually searching? Someone interested in becoming part of our church? Invite them and attend together! Are you a lifelong Lutheran but feel “rusty” about the basics of our faith? This is for you!

RLC 1 will focus on Welcoming all people into the body of Christ. This will be an introduction to Lutheran Christianity that will be helpful both to those new to the faith as well as cradle Lutherans as it explores the core teachings of the Christian faith. This course will also include some information on our ministry here at Resurrection. RLC 1 will be a requisite step for people who wish to make the commitment to move from being a participant in our ministry to becoming a member of the body of Christ in this place.

New members will be received on Sunday, October 1st at the 8:00am service.

Men’s Breakfast

& Bible Study . . . .

Meet Some New Resurrection Friends

Dinners for Eight

If you like good food, fellowship, and would enjoy an evening with Christian friends, “Dinners for Eight” is for you. Donn and Jackie Mitchell have stepped forward to organize a Dinners for Eight group which will meet five to six times per year. The concept is to have eight (or so) people meet at a hosts’ home. The host is responsible for arranging the date and preparing the main course. Each of the others would be asked to bring a side dish to complete the meal. The meal can be as varied as you like from a very casual BBQ to a more formal dinner, a lunch or a brunch. It is also a good time to try out some of those new recipes you’ve held on to over the years. We plan on meeting every other month, and will randomly assign the groups each time as well as rotating those who agree to be hosts.

This gives everyone an opportunity to get to know fellow RLC folks of all ages from all three worship services. If you are interested or would like more details please call Jackie or Donn at (317) 885-6553 or e-mail them at DandJMitch@Yahoo.com and include dinner group in the subject line.

ChristCare Small

Group Ministry

 A Leader Training Group is

Currently Being Formed

Pastor Mitch is currently gathering a group of people to be trained as ChristCare Small Group Leaders. This will be our second time through the new group-based model for ChristCare Leader Training. The former training model involved sixteen modules in a classroom setting. This worked well, but some people who went through training had no experience of being in a ChristCare Group and therefore felt a little unsure of themselves as they began to lead a group of their own.

The new model places the training within a ChristCare Group experience. Over the course of sixteen sessions, the training participants will themselves form a ChristCare Group and take part in all four core elements of ChristCare during the training. Therefore at the end of training they will be thoroughly prepared to lead a ChristCare Group, both from a theoretical and experiential perspective. Those who experienced this training model two years ago said that they really enjoyed it, and they were fully ready to begin leading a ChristCare Group.

If you are interested in participating in training to be a ChristCare Leader, there is a table in the narthex (under the coat rack) that has information about serving as a ChristCare Leader. You will also find there the training materials. When Pastor Mitch returns from vacation on August 7th, he plans to work on finalizing the training group. Applications (also on the table in the narthex) should be returned by August 6th. Questions can be left on Pastor Mitch’s voice-mail (881-7854 ext 203) or e-mail (PrMitch@RLCIndy.org) and he will contact you upon his return. Previously trained leaders are welcome to join in this new training model as a refresher.
