From the Staff . . . .
Dear Friends,
S.S. Discipleship . . . .
By the time you pick up this installment of the Bell Ringer, preparations will be in full gear for the beginning of our program year. After completing her maiden voyage last year, the crew of the SS Discipleship (our workshop rotation model for children’s Sunday School) is preparing to set sail on our second year. The Bon Voyage party will be on August 21st. The first rotation will be on the parable of the laborers in the vineyard – quite an interesting story for children who have such a heightened sense of “fairness.”
FaithBuilders & Youth Group . . . .
Moving up a little in age, we’ll see some new things for our middle and high schoolers this year. We have used the Head to the Heart (H2H) curriculum from the Faith Inkubators folks in our middle school confirmation ministry for a number of years. Last month, Julie Peralta, our Director of Youth Discipleship, attended the “H2H University” to learn from the creators of the materials how to help us make a strong ministry even better. The high schoolers have the privilege of helping to test and refine new materials – also from Faith Inkubators – for that age group. Back in April, Julie led a group of adults and youth on a weekend in Pennsylvania to get in on being a test site for Y3, a three-year curriculum that helps high school youth explore their faith and answer the question “Why?” This year the focus is going to be on “Why God.” The adults class can look forward to the youth group sharing several times a year what they have been learning and discussing.
Faith Stepping Stones . . . .
And yet one more new ministry will be launching this year . . . the Faith Stepping Stones sequence of short courses that brings children and parents together at eight significant times from birth through high school graduation. Each course concludes with a special Blessing Service that will take place during a Sunday morning worship service. This is a ministry our staff is very excited about – and it warrants a special letter that will be coming to you within the next couple of weeks from Julie and Pastor Dave. The first one of these courses has already taken place, and the Blessing Service will be part of the 10:45 worship on August 7th.
Adult Discipleship . . . .
For the adults, Pastor Dave will be
resuming the Crossways Bible Study on
Tuesdays. We also have a number of
ChristCare small groups – a few of which have
space available for additional people. During
2006, I will lead a new group to prepare to be
ChristCare Group Leaders. We will be
offering the full complement of Resurrection Life
Courses this year. First off will be RLC 1, which
is an introduction (or review) of the Christian
faith, Lutheranism, and Resurrection Lutheran
Church. This will take place during the
Discipleship Hour, beginning right after Labor
Day. Then following through the year will be:
RLC 2, which focuses on the marks of
discipleship; RLC 3, which helps us discover
Welcome . . . Serve . . . Equip . . . . Everything that I have mentioned so far
falls under the Nurture area of our mission.
There are, of course, lots of things happening
in the other areas as well. Our choirs will
soon be bringing their joyful vitality once again
to the worship aspect of the Welcome area of
our mission. Many ministries in the Serve area
of our mission are continuing, and we are
extending our service in the community by
participating in a Habitat for Humanity build
again this fall. The Equip area of our mission
will see some new activity as well with the
formation of a new leadership development
team that will be working to better equip all of
the ministry leaders at Resurrection. Ministry Teams . . . . In the midst of all of this, we continue
to move forward with the transition of our
ministry structure to focus on ministry teams.
Throughout the coming year, we will be
working to firmly establish all of these teams.
The new Congregation Council has begun its
work together and will be installed in August.
A special mini-retreat for the Council and the
Steering Team will take place on August 20th. An Exciting Year Ahead . . . . As you can see, it is going to be
another exciting year at Resurrection. This is
indeed a wonderful place to be a part of the
body of Christ. There may even be a few
surprises coming out of Pastor Dave’s
sabbatical experience this summer. He will be
sharing a report of his sabbatical activities with
us during the Discipleship Hour on Aug. 14th. There is one more thing I need to
mention here. You don’t have to look too
hard to recognize that with all of our growing
ministries, space is at a premium at RLC –
especially on Sundays and on Wednesday
evening. To help us accommodate all of our
ministries, you will notice that a section of the
bulletin board next to the main office has been
set aside for a master calendar. Susan Garten,
our parish administrator, will maintain this
calendar – it is simply posted for people to
view. Anybody who needs space for a meeting,
whether it be a ministry team, a ChristCare or
other small group, a class, or whatever, needs
to direct that request to Susan. Ministries and
groups that are on the master calendar have
the priority for space. We will do our best to
accommodate everyone, but Sunday mornings
and evenings are going to be especially difficult. It has been a great summer with
another successful Vacation Bible School,
camps, the youth pilgrimage trip, Scott
Mikkelson’s ordination, and everything else.
But now we are about to set sail on another
program year and I hope you’ll join us. I’ll see you at church!
My Bible . . . . If you will be in the 3rd or 4th grade this
fall, we invite you and your parents to attend a
fun-filled ten week Discipleship Hour time
together learning to highlight your new Bible!
We will meet in the RLC Fellowship Hall
beginning Sunday, August 28 and will conclude
Sunday, October 30. Then on Sunday,
November 13 during the 8:00am and 10:45am
worship services, parents will present the kids
their highlighted Bibles. Look for details to via
mail from Julie Peralta. Feed the Hungry . . . . Fletcher Place Community Center has
a food pantry with empty shelves! They
especially need rice and canned fruits, corn,
peas, and meats. This pantry is in the Fountain
Square area of downtown Indianapolis and they
serve about 600 people a month. Please bring
your food donations through August 14th and
place them in the wooden box in the narthex. Note: If you would be able to help
load and deliver the food (mornings) for
various RLC food drives, please contact Lois
Bowser at 821-9352. Also: Our Redeemer Lutheran Food
Pantry could use help from 10:00am to 1:00pm
on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Contact
Lois for more information. Pilgrimage Crew Returns . . . On Sunday, August 7 at 9:30am in the
Sanctuary, the nineteen youth and adults who
traveled to Colorado in July will be sharing
details from the trip with the congregation.
Come join us for an hour full of laughter, lots
of stories, and slides! Y3 - Why God? Why Jesus? Why the Bible? What is it, Who’s invited, When does it begin? “Faith Inkubators is in the development
stages of a new Senior High Apologetics (to make a
case) resource to give young people confidence in
their faith in the God of the Bible.” A team of
youth and adults from RLC traveled to Pennsylvania
to become a test site congregation for Y3, to help
them with the development and tweaking of the
resources.
Throughout the school year our Youth
Group will be discussing “Why God?” Through
presentations, small groups, service and fellowship
opportunities, along with leading the adult
discipleship hour two or three times in the year.
Our youth will also be encouraged to bring the
themes home with simple nightly devotions and into
discussions with their friends with weekly small
group materials.
Youth Group (9th-12th graders) are invited
to our first gathering, Sunday, August 28 beginning
at 5:30pm with dinner, discussion from 6:00-7:35pm. Please R.S.V.P. for dinner to Julie Peralta at

times to learn, serve, and have fellowship.
FaithBuilders (6th-8th graders this Fall) are
invited to an overnighter to jump-start the
year on Friday, August 26 beginning at 6:00pm
and concluding on Saturday, August 27 at

gather at 6:00pm for dinner in RLC’s fellowship
hall. Following the meal, the parents will have
an informational meeting while the Faith
Builders begin Session One. Details regarding
the overnighter will be coming via mail. If you
have any questions please contact Julie Peralta. Lutheran World Relief Fairly Traded Coffee As little as one percent of the retail price
of a cup of coffee makes its way back to the
farmer who grew the beans. The LWR Fairly
Traded Coffee Project is a program which
returns more coffee profit to growers in some
of the world’s poorest countries. Our congregation is proud to have begun
participation, and we are pleased with the
congregation's initial response. Thank you. As
participation builds and procedures are fine-tuned, we expect to increase product offerings
and decrease turn-around time. Please consider joining this worthwhile
effort by purchasing coffee that makes you feel
good two ways. Order forms are available at
the 9:30 Sunday coffee hour, or in the library
(to the left of the door). For more
information about the project, visit www.lutheranworldrelief.com/coffee. Kids Club . . . . If you will be in the 1st-5th grade by this
fall, we invite you to KIDS CLUB! The Kids
Club Team will be sending informational notes
home within the next couple weeks informing
you and your parents about the 2005 Fall
Activity Schedule! Please contact Ms. Julie if
you have any questions prior to receiving the
schedule. Camp Olivet Weekend
Ministry Team Needed . . . . Camp Olivet is located in southern
Indiana, between Bloomington and Bedford.
For a number of years, it has been the site of a
fellowship event for all ages over a Saturday
night. This year’s Olivet Retreat is September
17 and 18. The retreat begins with folks arriving
Saturday, perhaps bringing a picnic lunch.
Everyone shares dinner together on Saturday
and breakfast on Sunday. There may be
activities planned for Saturday afternoon and
evening, and the day ends with a campfire,
including devotions and singing. Sunday
morning includes a worship service and then
we pack up and head home. Sleeping
arrangements are on bunk beds, either in
cabins or in the dorm upstairs in the lodge. In the past, this event has been
coordinated by members of the Fellowship
Board. We now need a team of people to plan
and coordinate this event – and that team
needs to form as soon as possible for this
year’s event to take place and be a success. If
you would like to be part of the Camp Olivet
Weekend Team, please contact Pastor Mitch. Habitat for Humanity Build Dates Set . . . . Resurrection will be participating in a
Habitat for Humanity build this fall. Our build
dates are: Sept. 29 (afternoon); Oct. 1
(morning & afternoon with lunch provided);
and Oct. 13 (afternoon). We will need
volunteers to help with digging, painting,
trimming, punch lists, and landscaping. Watch

seeking interested folks to help with the
Christmas Program in many different areas. If
